Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Gateway computer that has been upgraded to the Windows XP operating system. It continues to the reboot screen without allowing the computer to go anywhere else. On the blue screen it mentions BIOS settings and to turn off or change shadowing or caching settings but I can't get into the system to make any changes... any suggestions?

Will not properly boot up

For starters the support for XP has been ended by Microsoft so no more updates it is now classified as a vulnerable operating system. Please upgrade to Windows 7 or better, if you are looking to troubleshoot when the computer is booting up tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu click on Startup in Safe mode, this will continue to boot the machine, enter your username and password then goto control panel, add remove programs and uninstall any software that you think could be causing this issue, reboot back this time without the F8 key and see if changes made have any effect on the operating system. Otherwise you can google you problem

How to change from window7 starter to ultimate without formating my system

Each computer you purchase comes with a Home Edition Windows 7 product, unless otherwise stated in the computer's details. To upgrade your edition, you must purchase a new license key, such as an Enterprise license key. You no longer need to install an upgrade to promote your computer. Instead, Windows 7 has a "Windows Anytime Upgrade" utility that allows you to enter a new license and promote your computer's operating system.

Click the Windows "Start" button. Type "windows anytime upgrade" in the search text box. Press "Enter." This command starts the upgrade wizard for Windows 7. Click the "Windows Anytime Upgrade" option, and select "Enter an Upgrade Key" in the options section. This activates a text box where you type your new license key. Type the Enterprise key in the license text box labeled "Upgrade Key." Click "Next." Windows verifies your license key is valid and tells you that you must wait several minutes to activate your new product license. Click "Reboot" after your new product activates. When you reboot, notice the new product edition "Enterprise" is shown in the Windows splash screen.

My computer keeps showing blue screens, and my software is corrupted. How can I restore my files without the WINDOWS XP CD?

The Windows XP installation CD includes an option to repair an existing Windows XP installation. Using this option allows you to reinstall Windows without losing the files, personal data and programs you already have on the system. To take advantage of it, just place the CD into your CD or DVD drive on your PC and reboot the computer. During the installation you will be prompted if you wish to use the recovery console to repair a Windows installation. The recovery console is rather limited in its use, so just press the Enter key to proceed with the installation as you would normally.

blank.gif Press F8 to continue past the Licensing Agreement.

blank.gif The next screen should display a prompt asking you if you wish to repair an existing installation. Select your Windows installation (most likely it is the only one) and press R.

blank.gif This will begin the repair and reinstallation of Windows. The installation will copy files to the hard drive, reboot the system, and then proceed just like a normal installation. Follow the prompts just as you normally would any normal Windows installation.
When the installation completes, you should still be able to access all of your documents and installed programs.

A Security Central adware/scareware has infected my windows xp and will not allow download fixes. I am told microsoft offers a free service takeover remote repair and clean up. Being computer illiterate,...

The only spyware removal service that Microsoft offers free is a Trial of OneCare or the free Windows Defender.

To self remove this, your best bet is to reboot in safe mode. To do this reboot the computer, tap F8 after your logo screen but before the windows logo screen. Select Safe mode with networking. Download www.superantispyware.com and update it. then run and see if that solves your problem.

Microsoft offers no support for their products if the product was purchased through a computer manufacturer like Dell, Acer, Gateway, Emachine, etc.

How do I upgrade my laptop from 98 to xp without licence or cd

The only way you can upgrade your Operating System is by installing a new version. Windows XP would be your best option.
You can get a genuine Windows XP from a computer store, online or from a friend who can give it to you for free.

Screen blackouts & graphics mess up

I have experienced the same problem with an Nvidia graphics card. From what I could tell, it was an overheating issue to begin with, which quickly turned into a damaged graphics card. What I ended up doing on my desktop is opening up the side of the case, and decreasing the graphics load on the card. I still ended up having to replace the graphics card. I would suggest upgrading to windows 7 as well, even if you have driver problems, the upgrades in the OS seem to handle the errors much better and recovers without the severe color / rendering problems like XP did.
If you are confident it was not an overheating issue that started this, please boot your computer into safe mode, completely uninstall the graphics drivers, reboot into safe mode and install the drivers again. Most Operating Systems tend to stay 'sick' from old drivers even when you're using new drivers, so the best way to do it is completely get rid of it, and put it back in.

NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND AFTER I JUST LOADED XP HOME AND ALL THE UPDATES FOR IT ?

Put your windows disc in the drive and reboot. It should allow you to boot from disc and then you can install as per on screen instructions.
You have basically erased the hard drive and the OS
For future reference, just put your install disc in and reboot, you will be given an option of upgrade, or install. By installing you will automatically format the drive.

Assist with an Operating System start issue? PC is a Gateway GT5228

the following will re-install windows without destroying your stuff but you must follow it exactly !!!!!!!
  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
  3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. To Repair Install, press ENTER
\r\n'); FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.borderStyle','double','style.borderWidth','3px','style.padding','5px','style.backgroundColor','#F9F4D5','style.backgroundImage','url(\'edgbkgnd4.gif\')'); FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.visibility','visible')" onclick="FP_changeProp(/*id*/'layer1',0,'style.visibility','hidden')" height="21" alt="To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER." src="http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/note.gif" width="15" border="0" /> do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
  7. good luck beergut707
