Question about GE Dryers

1 Answer

My GE Dryer works, but when the drum turns it makes a loud squeaking noise. Sometimes it is worse than others. Is there anything I can do to stop the noise or is it a sign that the belt is going. The dryer is probably about 5-6 years old. DHDSR46GE0WW

It could be several things.

Your dryer uses nylon or plastic glides at the front of the clothes drum for support. When these are worn, they can be noisy. When that happens, replace them. Here is a video at this will walk you thru the replacement and inspection of the front bearing and glides. It may be a different model but the process will be the same. The blower wheel is another common place to hear noise and this is easy to check and inexpensive. The idler pulley is another part that frequently fails. Your dryer supports the clothes drum in the rear with a center spindle instead of rollers. The spindle may be a ball-and-socket type support or a shaft through a sleeve. When the components are worn, they may squeak, squeal, or rub. You can't repair them. Just replace them when they're worn. All of these parts are inexpensive and easy to replace. There is a video of this also at the same site. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. All parts come with installation instructions. Not all models are available.

GE 5 Cycle Automatic Heavy Duty Extra Large loud noise

All ge dryers have a center bearing on the back side of the drum and drum glides on the frontside. The glides make a scrubbing sound when bad and the drum is hard to turn. The rear bearing does a squeak thang when the plastic bearing wears thin and begins to make metal to metal contact between drum mount and rear bulkhead mount. It is an easy fix but the drum gotta come out. here is my pictorial page that shows how with videos and repair pix:

Very loud squeaking noise - like a noisy loose fan belt on a car.

The dryer needs to be rebuilt, new drum belt and drum rollers to cure this problem.

When we turn on our Whirlpool Supreme electric dryer, it heats up and dries clothes, but it is making a loud squeaking noise throughout the cycle...sometimes louder than others.

The squeaking noise can be caused by any of the following.

Location High:

Belt slipping on the dryer drum

Worn Drum seals but would sound more like a dragging noise

Location Low:

Belt tensioner pulley bearing frozen and the idler pulley shaft is spinning inside the belt tensioner assy.

Belt slipping on the motor bearing

Motor bearing is dry

Thanks for using FixYa!

My Maytaag dryer has a loud intermittent squeal. It will often work for 10-15 minutes with a quiet squieak or no noise, then the loud squeak starts up. I can turn the dryer off, but the squeal immidately...

I think the drum drive belt is slipping because it occurs more with a large load. Other possibilities are: A drum support wheel bearing could need lubrication or be replaced. Also some drum support wheels have a rubber coating that wears off causing misalignment and noise. Possibly drum gasket (sometimes felt material) where drum meets rear panel is worn allowing metal-to-metal contact--should be replaced. New GE Profile Dryer makes intermittent loud squeeking or rubbing

Your drum may be out of round. The drum belt on the outside of the drum may be rubbing against the cabinet. When the cabinet heats up, the side walls of the cabinet may be bowing inward, thus making contact with the belt on the drum. This would explain why it is intermittant. When the heater turns off, the cabinet cools and the sides bow back out.
