What is the correct proceedure to re-fill radiator in 1998 ford escort?
Assuming you have a 3.8 (maybe a 3.0), it's pretty simple. In the 90s, Ford had no bleeders in the cooling system wo check it out. Go to Autozone, and get the pre-mixed 50/50 coolant. A V-6 should hold little more than 1.5 gallons. after you've secured the drain plug, start filling the system. If memory serves, the late 90s Fords had the fill at the resevoir/"recovery bottle". Just fill it slowly until it's at the "hot" fill. Put the cap on, and start the engine. come back around to under the hood and watch the tank. As it gets lower, add more coolant. You want to make sure you run it at least until the thermostat opens (when the upper hose is hot, it's open.) shut the engine off, and sssslllloooowwwwllllllyyyyyyy start to remove the radiator cap. DO NOT TAKE IT OFF COMPLETELY! This is an easy way to "burp" the system. Top off to "hot", only when you can safely remove the cap. Run the engine again, and repeat, as necessary. When you're done, make sure the system is topped off to the "hot" full line, NOT TO THE BRIM. My tick has always been to slowly work the radiator cap to let the air out, slowly. Bubbles are our enemy, so get rid of 'em.
Some techs like to take off the upper hose, and poor coolant directly into the radiator, but so long as the system's working properly, filling at the resevoir works just fine. Be careful when the engine gets to normal operating temperature! We're talking temps in excess of 200 degrees. Also, if you have to money, just replace the cap, now. A poor performing radiator cap reduces the performance of the cooling system, and on a Ford, heat is a bad thing.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!
