1-check the device manager
2-in sounds and ... look for a yellow symbol
2a-If a symbol appears try to update the driver or disable it.
2b-Restart (at boot the Os will try to recognize the device and auto install the driver.
3-test your speakers in other PC

Can you send your OS and your device model/brand.

I have a compaq presario and have lost all sound. The speaker icon has an x in it and when I right click it says no output device installed.

After reinstalling/installing an Operating System you can lose the Audio Drivers or sometimes they just corrupt.. Try reinstalling the Audio Drivers from the disk provide with your P.C./Laptop. If you no longer have the disk just visit the website of the makers of your P.C./Laptop or Motherboard and download the Audio Drivers from there, after that install them.
Thumbs up please if this works for you, thanks.

Sound missing

Right click on My Computer.
Click Manage
In the left pane, click Device Manager
In the right pane, expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
Does your device show up there?
Are there any unknown devices?

Try entering your laptop model into this, and downloading the audio drivers. Double click to run or use HP's automatic install.

Good luck!
