All electric motors run hot and pool pumps are no different. But how hot is too hot for a pool pump? The first test is simply whether you can touch the motor or not. Under normal operating conditions, the motor end of the pump is hot enough that you can barely touch it - but not searing hot.

Discharge of pump goes into inlet of filter, outlet of filter goes back to pool.
Line from pool skimmer or bottom goes into inlet of pump.

The outlet from the skimmer goes to the pump inlet the pump outlet goes to the filter inlet the filter outlet returns to the pool

You can simply buy a larger pool filter that is designed for pools in your size range. Look for one that is designed for smaller above ground pools. You can find lots of different pool filters at backyardcitypools.com.

This blog has information about sinking an above ground pool. It is normally recommended that you do not sink the pool entirely into the ground becuase of pressure concerns and the risk of collapse. Generally, you leave 1-3 feet of the pool above the ground and install a deck or similar feature to make the pool appear to be in the ground. The type of pool liner that you have (expandable) is best for this practice, but it can be done with overlap or regular beaded liners also.

Sounds like the bearings are worn. If they are you will soon need a new pump.
