Make sure the launch manager is started, that should show you the volume up down, etc.

For about one week, when I try to listen to audio, no sound comes out of the laptop speakers so I tried external speakers but that did not work. I restored my system to a point well before the sound quit...

The sound driver is a very delicat thing. Go to Device Manager and see if the sound card is installed.
But right click on My computer- Manage- Services and Applications- Services and look for the Windows Audio service. Check how it is and set the startup type as automatic.
If this doesn't help try to uninstall the drivers, restart your computer and reinstall them.
Go to Acer website ( http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3734&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=17&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3734&CountryISOCtxParam=UK&ctx1g.c2att92=122&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2980211862 ) and download the driver.
If this doesn't fix your problem try reinstalling the operating system and install the drivers in the appropriate order: first the chipset, etc.
It is the safest way to resolve the problem if you reinstall your operating system.

What is 1- Ethernet controller driver 2- mass storage controller 3- moderm device on high Definition audio bus 4- SM bus controller How to solve it.

Hello.

I guess some computer components refused to work and you found yellow question marks on Device Manager.

So…
1. Ethernet Controller manages communication over computer network
More info on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_interface_card

2. Mass Storage Controller manages storage of large amounts of data (that includes hard disks, floppy disks, flash memory, optical disks, removable and non-removable media, but not RAM)
More info on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_storage

3. Modern Device on High Definition Audio Bus manages audio that is capable of delivering the features and high-end performance of an add-in audio card
More info on Intel site: http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/hdaudio.htm

4. SM bus controller is the System Management Bus that is used in personal computers and servers for low-speed system management communications. An SMBus controller is integrated into most Intel chipsets.

I dont have any Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus

Try a system restore to a previous date when the sound was working fine. Please backup all your current DATA as you may lose them.
Or click here and select your operating system and download and install the Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver
Good Luck!

Hi.
Your model of Presario has an audio controller that supports the high definition audio. You need to have Microsoft Universal Audio
Architecture(UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio installed on the computer before installing the audio drivers. After installing the UAA drivers restart the notebook and then install
the audio drivers. After Audio drivers installation,U have to folllow the steps.
1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.
3. Select "Install from a list or specific location".
4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install".
5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.
6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\sp***** folder and select the .inf (wisxxxx) file and click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.
