Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

No sound! I've set sound at 80%, not on fm transmitter. Used to work fine, now there is no sound from mp3, map instructions, or anything else. When I plug in earphones I can hear, but the external speaker seems to be off. Help!

I have the same problem as this person. No sound. Directions are there and the sound is 80% on the system settings, but have no one "talking" to me about the directions, which is why I bought this Garmin. Please help

Yes, I have the same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 660. It has no audio except through the headphones....Please let me know how to disassemble this beast. It looks small enough but I do not see any break-in points. It is out of warranty and I have worked as an avionics technician for 24 years, soldering and desoldering, etc...this just seems awkwardly built. I could start prying but really would like to ask for some directions first. Please help.
    Thanks!!!

If you can hear audio through the headphone jack but not the internal speaker jack, then the speaker is bad.

This is a problem I have seen many times before. I will be posting an article soon on how to replace the internal speaker, however this is not a repair that just anyone can do.

You have to have skills in dissassembly & soldering.

Also, the speaker is a 1.35" diameter, low profile speaker. The original speaker has a blue & black wire running from the speaker to a 2 position plug, which plugs into the main board. I would salvage the wires from the original speaker to make use of the original plug. I'll be posting a procedure on how to take apart the Nuvi and replace the speaker. Again, this is a procedure for those with dissassembly & soldering skills and units no longer under warranty.

Garmin Nuvi won't talk. No sound when programming

If the mute is not checked, try plugging in a set of headphones. if you now hear sound, your internal speaker is blown. Please see this link:

Have you tried to use a set of headphones to see if you hear anything?

Another check is to make sure FM Transmitter isnt checked
To do that Click Volume icon
bottom of screen you see FM Trans
click it
make sure there is no checkmark in Enable FM Transmitter
click back to main menu

The voice is just not working, all else is fine, no, the mute is not on...??

Do you have the unit set to internal speaker or FM Transmitter? Go to the Volume section from the menu, FM Trans, disable FM Transmitter.

No sound when put on 88.3 fm

I didn't think this unit had an included FM transmitter - so I looked around for more info, and everything I've found indicates it does not.

It will however play audio via the built-in speaker or headphone jack. Use of a third party FM transmitter will allow playing audio (navigation, alerts, MP3 or audio books) when connected to the headphone jack and with both the FM transmitter and FM radio set to the same frequency.

The FM transmitter will work best when set to a frequency that is unused and has the least amount of interference from adjacent stations. Check by tuning the car radio across the FM band and note frequencies that have those qualities. Leave the radio on one of the clear frequencies and set the FM transmitter to the same displayed on the radio. You should try several to find the one that works best. Also, be aware that as you travel, you may enter an area where that frequency (or one close by) is in use by a broadcaster. This will require repeating the process as needed to reduce interference.

Everything works fine on the unit no problem until

3. If your Nuvi has a FM transmitter, is it selected to "FM" or "Speaker"? The "FM" setting will mute the internal speaker. Setting it to "Speaker" will send sound to the speaker.

if this side of it works then the FM transmitter is faulty

Check that the sound has not been MUTED

plug the earphone into the socket to see if any sound is heard. The socket is also a switch that takes sound from internal speaker to ephone and reverse.
If no sound is hear in either FM or normal mode your unit is faulty and needs repair

Garmin Nuvi 660 - how do I get FM Transmitter firmware

I believe in your location it comes as an option. transmitter is an optional module. You can browse the user manual at following link (PDF file) http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1262_OwnersManual.pdf
You can see at 35th page, simple instructions have been given for FM transmitter settings.

If it doesn't work please contact to the Manufacturer. I couldn't find Garmin's Ireland number. However you may call UK number +44-870-8501242. Or simple you call your reseller.

Good Luck
