Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Maytag Neptune TL (FAV6800AWQ , Serial # 10178127EC) that starts and stops after the wash cycle begins. It fills up fine but starts and stops/pauses and the time doesn’t lapse. On a normal load setting it seems to get stuck at 32 minutes. It doesn’t drain either but I can do manually by going to the diagnostic mode. Any one have a solution for this one?

Thanks a ton Rich...I'll try your suggestions this evening and see if I can diagnose the issue.

  • billy_j_holl Oct 13, 2010

I found the service manual at this link: http://appliancedigest.com/index.php?/fi...

    Wasn't easy to find..

Hey Rich. I'm thinking its the bearing. When there is a load of clothes (in Quick Wash mode) it will start at 29 minutes and only make it to the 23 minute mark. Then it trys to spin up for 4-5 seconds then shuts down....then repeats. Never moves past the 23 minute mark.

When I do the spin test it only hit 560 RPM's. It makes a fairly load squeeling noise but the belt still turns. Does that sound more like the bearing or the clutch/pulley?

Have any idea the cost of these parts? The service manual also mentions a special wrench needed to change the bearing....any idea where to find one or is there something else that can but used instead of obtaining the wrench.

    Again, appreciate your assistance!

You have a Series 10 machine 1st two digits of your s/n.

Seems like you have the Service Manual or troubleshooting guide.....can't get that from Servicematters any more I feel you have some drive system binding.

I helped a owner on another forum similar problem. Google this "Neptune TL Spinning Issue Will Not Proceed". Did a lot of up front testing in the end he ended up replaceing the Outer Tub Bearings, the Clutch Pulley.

Start by opening the washer lid and see if you can rotate the wash basket with one finger in the CCW Spin direction. There should be only slight resistance to rotate the wash basket CCW. During the 1st water fill of the wash basket the Control Board will spin the wash Basket slow rpm you can enter Service Mode and observe the rpm on the LED console.

Next start a Quick Spin test and note the highest RPM range the machine will spin up to. Looking for Outer Tub Bearing resistance.

I would suggest another DIY forum to work thru this issue if you are going to DIY. This forum is hit and miss we posting pics and e-mail notification for support......Rich

Good deal Bill I did not want to cross post any links. Try the Quick Spin test and see if the empty wash basket will spin up to 850RPM. you can watch the RPM range steps while in service mode the test dosen't take long. See page 14 of the SM.

I feel you have some drive system resistance possible Outer Tub Bearing when in spin cycle or Spinner shaft bearing resistance which comes into play during was cycle. The Quick Spin test will Spin the Wash Basket CCW (Spin direction) so lets make sure the Outer Tub Bearings are not part of the issue. I would also watch with the front panel emoved if you can observe the wash basket rotating CCW during the first water fill of the selected wash cycle. in Service Mode it will show about 40-50 RPM. Again looking for a possible Outer Tub Bearing issue.

If you are going to DIY do find a better site. Again I don't want to cross post any links. I wanted to get the last couple of owners with issues started before I pull the plug on this site...........****

    Rich,

After trying to run a load of clothes in the Quick Wash mode (starts at 29 min) it basically stalls at the 23 minutes. The washer starts....runs for 4-5 seconds the stops again and just continues to repeat. The timer never goes lower than 23 minutes. Also getting a pretty loud squeel as it trys to run but the belt is still turning.

When I ran the Quick Spin test with no clothes in the machine, I get a reading of 56 (560rpms) but the noise persists.

Does that sound more like the bearing or the clutch/pulley?

If so, any idea what those parts cost these days? Also the service manual mentioned a special wrench. Will that be needed? Where can I get that? Is there something else that works in its place?

    Again...I appreciate all your help!

    Bill,

Yes you have Outer Tub Bearing issues and they need to be replaced.

None of my links are coming thru on the comment. Leave this forum and repost your issue
    athttp://forum.appliancepartspros.com/wash...

It's free and it's a true DIY applaince repair forum. Post your model number and a brief description of your bearing noise and your troubleshooting steps so far.

I can post pic's and have a e-mail link to help you with bearing info and the replacement process and other parts needed which should be under a $100 including the Spinner Nut removal tool. I have had it with this BS forum.

Maytag Neptune TL washer overfilling

yes i would agree the water valve is defective as if unplugged it should close, but also sounds like a pressure sensor or pressure hose problem that is also defective too due to the fact that it should at least start the wash cycle even though the water doesn't stop filling,so also it could be the central control unit, pressure switch or pressure hose

Need to reset the program of our maytage neptune TL ver: FAV6800AWQ

""need to reset the program of our maytage neptune TL ver: FAV6800AWQ ""

The only hard reset to the Control Board is to unplug your FAV6800A from the 120VAC service outlet then reconnect.

I feel this will not clear your machine issue. What do you mean by reset the program of our maytage neptune TL?

Won't progress beyond wash cycle -- start light is flashing. Cannot switch from "normal" to delicate or any other choice. Maytag Neptune TL FAV6800AW

So I understand the issue. Does the wash cycle start up? By that I mean if you release the washer top from the base do the tumblers turn once the water fill cycle is complete?

If you don't have the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual (you can't get it on line anymore) see this post Clutch Fix I describe how to release the washer top from the base to observe the wash basket. Don't raise during the water fill cycle wait till that completes.

Does the key pad beep as you press the other cycle select key pads?

This could be a Control Board issue...........Rich

I have a Maytag Neptune FAV6800AWQ Serial Number

Fireman,

Excellent info wish all post would start off like this. The first two digits of the s/n are your series number a Series 16 machine I’m an owner no expert and will try to help.

I assume you have the Service Manual but just in case.

FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

“”I can grab the drive belt and effortlessly move it back and forth-pulley spins and motor spins--Should it move like this?””

There should be slight resistance.

With the front cover off and be careful of the rotating drive belt can you start a Spin Only cycle?

Do you see the Motor rotate the Clutch Pulley assembly CCW? If so the wash basket should spin CCW just raise the washer top and verify the CCW/Spin rotation.

If that works again with the front cover off start a Quick Wash cycle min Soil/Spin settings and observe as the washer. As it fills the wash basket will be rotating CCW don’t raise the washer top to high or you will spray water around.

After the water fill the washer will start to Wash/Agitate. The Motor will rotate the Clutch Pulley CW and the Tumblers will rotate. Do you see this action.

You can go into Service Mode with this procedure and dump the wash water if the cycle fails with this procedure.

I would go to page 16 of the SM lower right hand part of page, Board Output Test and turn on the drain pump in service mode to pump out the tub.

Enter Service Mode by simultaneously pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key.

Thank you again for the Model number and Serial number…. other readers this is how you post an issue.

Waiting for your feedback………Rich

Maytag neptune TL

The machine needs to cut you a break;

“”i have a maytag neptune TL and there are several things wrong with it...1. I can't wash small loads it will stop at the spin cycle and flash dc””

This issue is a clutch issue see this post to DIY the repair.

“”it will wash fine on regular loads until it comes to spin cycle again and it will stop and flash nf””

This one is a little confusing the “nf” error is a No water fill error code. Check these two post for support regarding water inlet restriction or valve not opening properly.

nf post nf post 2

“”my fabric softener dispenser will not let the softener out neither will the bleach dispenser””

See this fabric softer post for support. The fabric softener dispenser may be clogged or the water dispenser valves feeding both dispensers may not be operating properly. The Service Manual on page 16 “Board Output Test” will give you support to turn on the Fabric Softener Valve and Bleach valve. See if you hear the valves operate in Service Mode”

My method may seem a little confusion for viewing water flow to the dispensers. This issue could be associated to the nf error you are receiving, restricted water flow (inlet screen clog) or cold water valve not working properly.

Post back for any questions or possible support I can offer. I’m an owner like you not a repair person but I’m very comfortable working on this machine. Rich
