I just brought a hp deskjet j4580 and I brought it second hand it has no cables or cords will it be expensive to replace ?

It shouldn't be too awfully much to fix- you only need a power cord and a usb cord with a compatible fitting for the printer. If you take it to a used computer shop, or Best Buy, or Radio Shack, they should be able to get you going.

Will not scan, goes into warm up mode and then turn power off and

Might try unplugging the power cord and letting it sit for about 20 minutes. Right off hand it sounds like its getting to hot. Even if it is turned off power is still going to the printer so it can still get hot.

Not sure about r40's, but look here about the leaking ink solution for G85's and DJ900's: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/22399

There is a guy named BERT who is a master a fixing HP units, and his email can be found in the above mentioned forum note.
