If the upper thread continuously breaks, most likely the machine is threaded incorrectly. Most brand machines thread similarly, so even if you are unable to locate a manual, a threading diagram from a similar model may be helpful:

Husky sewing machine threading Google Search

Be sure to use only good quality thread--no bargain bin threads or old thread from grandma's sewing box.

Remove the thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the upper thread. Set the upper tension to midway (the standard tension setting) and retest your machine.

If it continues to break, check that the thread is not wrapped around a guide or the spool pin. Sometimes the thread will catch on the little thread spool notch that holds the thread on the spool (if so, flip the spool over so the notch is on the top).

====
Those knobs on the front are most likely:
1) stitch length selector
2) stitch width selector
3) perhaps a stitch pattern selector
4) the tension dial (very left above the needle) or on the very top left, and

there is also a reverse selector that is sometimes part of the stitch length knob

sometimes there may be a feed dog control usually located at the very bottom right of the machine (dropped feed dog is used for darning or free motion quilting)

Touch & Sew Deluxe Zigzag model 646. Where can I get a repair manual?

Search the internet for the

make + model + "manual"

Service manuals are sometimes difficult to find as they were frequently intended only for repair personnel.

You might try some Singer sewing machine groups, ie Yahoo. Group members are usually very helpful.

I have a White Model 1717 sewing machine. I can't seem to get it to sew a straight stitch. There are two #5 stitch choices but I can't change which one I am using. How do I do that?

I looked up your manual for free at www.singerco.com under customer support. I do not see 2 #5's. I see two choices under #5, they are straight and zigzag. To get a straigth stitch, you need to put your stitch width at 0. If, you want a tight stitch make it the length longer, as in 4. Why not just download a free copy and save it to your computer so that you have it to refer to?

How to thread a Viking Huskey Model 140

Remove the needle.
The flat of the needle goes toward the back of the machine, make sure that there is a groove in the front of the needle (that goes to the top of the shank).

Reduce the tension to low (2-3). Gradually increase tension to get a proper stitch.

I just bought a used Husqvarna 2000 sl without a manual.

If you have on old Husqvarna 2000 from the 1970's, then the knobs are as follows:

Top front left: Pattern Selector
Top right: Stitch width
Lower: Stitch length and buttonhole (when turned to 0 and pulled out)
Extreme left: Upper tension
Side left: Presser foot pressure
