Dvd rom is not working

Hi Roan,

I see that your DVD ROM on your Laptop is not working.

I believe that it does not read any DVD or CD Discs that your try to play or insert on it, and it is not found in my computer.

Follow the steps bellow, whatever windows you have running on your computer this will still lead to the same page, follow in order.

  • Click on the START button or the Windows Button on the lower left of the screen then click run in windows XP and on Win7 and Vista on the search bar lower left type REGEDIT then press enter.
  • the Registry Editor will show up and on the Upper Left will be a list of Registry Keys, Look for HKEY_Local_Machine.
  • Then Click Systems
  • Current Control Set
  • Control
  • and under Control a list of devices will show look for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318} - This will be the DVD/CD-Rom drive.
  • Once you click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318}, on the right side it will show filters look for upper and lower filters right click on both and delete. then after deleting it is best to restart your computer for changes to take effect.

I hope this will help.

My Gateway notebook, model : 4535GZ doesn't see any drives upon boot-up. I went into setup and I don't know all the info to manually input the hard drive or CD drive. The hard drive is an Fujitsu,...

@bevrog

If you see the Fujitsu HDD model#: MHU2100AT. under BIOS setup, that means the HDD is there but the operating system is not loading up. Try the following:

1. Run System Recovery (turn the computer ON and press the F11 key simultaneously) - take note that this will erase everything and you'll start from scratch.
2. If you have a Recovery Discs, press F12 simultaneously upon boot-up and choose to boot from the CD/DVD drive
3. If a System Recovery Window came up (see image below), then proceed and wait until it restore Windows.

If you don't get an image similar to the screen above, and you get an error like PXE Error Media State Media Disconnected, or 0x000000E or "An I/O Error occured" - this is a sign that your HDD is already failing and needs to be replaced. If you're still under warranty, call gateway support at 1-800-846-2000.

Good luck.

My sister has a two-plus-year-old MT6840 that just had the battery replaced. However, both before that issue and since she has had trouble with her display. The computer will load as though it is starting...

The easiest way to narrow down the problem would be to boot the computer with a copy of Ubuntu.

You can either create a boot cd or convert a flash drive into a bootable drive. The flash drive boots much much quicker so I definitely recommend you following the creation method for that on Ubuntu's download page. If you don't have a flash drive, don't worry, the boot cd will still work ;)

One thing to note is your computer's boot order. Usually pressing F12 on a Gateway will bring up a temporary menu so you can select your copy of Ubuntu. If not enter the BIOS setup menu and change your boot order.

Once the Ubuntu launch screen comes up just choose TRY UBUNTU this will create a live session.

If Ubuntu works without any hitches then it's likely a Windows software issue OR a hardware issue.

You can run a trail version of HDD REGENERATOR to physically scan the hard drive exactly like Ubuntu, LIVE.

If it comes back clean then YES, it's a windows software issue. Which entails more testing and button pushing.

Try the above and let me know how everything turns out.

Re-install Windows from the "System Restore" set of CDs/DVDs that came with the computer.

If you have lost those disks, you can order a replacement set from Gateway, for about $20 to $40.

The Gateway-modified version of Windows will re-install properly onto the Gateway hardware.
