Make sure you are installing the right drivers to your operating system. If this is an older sound card, goto the manufactures web page and download the updated drivers there.

Okay you cannot upgrade from windows 98 just not possiable what you need to do is this completly format the hard disk and install windows 7 now if you bought the upgrade your going to need to install windows xp then put in the upgrade disk to install windows 7.
Now you can try booting from the windows 7 cd and try to install it but if it cannot find a qualification product such as XP you need to bring that copy with your reciept back to the store and purchase the FULL install of windows 7.

A work around is to install Virtual PC 2007 on your computer, create a virtual machine and install Windows XP (or any other operating system that supports your device).
This is probably your only solution until your device receives official Windows 7 support.
