What is it doing? Is it giving you an error message?
Try going to trendmicro.com and running house call, and live.com and running the full service scan they are both free scans. If you have a virus it can keeo a antivirus product from installing unfortuantly a virus can keep the above scans from running.
this is how i fixed to problem i was having the same issue with the free avg 8.5 and 9.0 i downloaded the free 7.5 from brothersoft which is out dated but it will load and run with errors but you just keep updating it. after the second or thrid update avg will ask you to upgrade to the 8.5 and it will work fine. i just kept udating it until i had the 8.5 version most important you must delete the version you are having problems with before you download the outdated 7.5 version. if you keep the 8.5 and try to download the 7.5.

I've had a Hitachi Simpledrive II 1tb external HD for about a month and a half now and its worked properly. Now when I connect it Windows is saying it is malfunctioning. When I got into device manager it told me that the drivers were not installed. It works on other computers when I try it but my computer won't see it (it just comes up as unknown device) and it appears to not have any drivers. It was a plug and play device, and it's just simply not functioning that way anymore. I had an internal HD crash yesterday and today I pulled out the bad drive, and when I booted back up everything was normal except for this not working anymore.

Exactly the same, couldn't start up the AVG 8.0 Free so like an idiot paid for the full programme with the same outcome. AVG don't want to know. Never had a problem with 7.5 Free. Have tried various free downloads with no success.
