Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

MyBook's power light is blinking, but not showing up on my Mac's desktop

My MyBook Premium (320GB, FireWire) was working fine for about 4 months. But now when I plug it in, the blue power light comes on, but when I plug in the FireWire cable to my Mac, the hard drive never shows up on my desktop. Then the blue light starts blinking about once every 5 seconds. I don't know much about computers, but it seems like my hard drive is just not being recognized by my Mac even though its on. I contacted Western Digital support, but they just said to exchange it for another one. If that is my only option, what is the estimated cost for a data recovery service (I have about 10,000 songs and some video projects on it)? Thanks!

I have the same problem; I plug in the USB cable and the computer brings up the window 'New Hardware Found' but then claims it can't find the driver. The WD drive says the driver is already installed on the drive itself, but it obviously doesn't work. I've tried downloading what I *think* is the right software from WD's support website but after installing it, all it wants to do is sync - which isn't what I'm after! I just want to be able to explore the drive so I can drag / drop files from my PC onto it. Why is this so difficult, what am I doing wrong?

Data recovery usually will cost about 2000 - 3500. i may be able to help as long as the platters aren't physically damaged. Send me the drive at your cost. I will pull all data and return data on burned dvds I keep the drive. If i can't retrieve data then i will return drive to you at my cost. jprusso@yahoo.com

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

I would disconnect it and connect it again. You probably will be asked to assign it a drive name like G-Drive or E-Drive.

WD MyBook 320 GB Premium - Retrieving Data

You should buy a program called "Partition Table Doctor". I went through the EXACT same thing and it was just a bad partition on my mybook which is the EXACT same as yours is. It cleared up the problem for me. I still have problems with my mybook so i wish that I bought a different hard drive, but oh well.

but try "Partition Table Doctor", it will scan your mybook and fix any partition errors with it.

I was in the same boat as you over a year ago and trust me, "Partition Table Doctor" is a LIFESAVER!
