Question about Royal AG10X Shredder

2 Answers

I own a Royal ag 10x Paper Shredder — the cutting blades are packed with (unremovable) paper and the unit jams constantly, on even the smallest, lightest paper. Granted, perhaps I shredded something once that had that gummy glue on it. Is it possible to replace just the blade unit? If so, how and where do I turn for the parts and/or repair.

First, I just called Royal about parts for this unit as I have the same model. It has been out of production for years, thus they have no parts for it. My reaction was "Oh, when it gets old and needs to repaired that's when you quit carrying the parts?" They didn't appreciate my snarky response.

My particular shredder has a big problem with the cutting wheels since two spacers were left out. It would take some pictures and a long explanation, so to keep it short: those missing spacers make the cutters super hard to turn because extra paper will jam in where it isn't supposed to. Get an awl, an ice pick, a scribe, or whatever, and get all the jammed in paper out of there!

Also, if you hear the motor making noises that sound a bit like grinding, that means the bushing is going. I fixed that by rotating the motor in it's mount by 180 degrees. This puts the worn part of the bushing in the other direction.

Lastly. the lube they recommend on the cutting blades is essentially just canola oil. They have a special blend they will sell you, but many claim you can get by with canola or cutting oil. Nail polish remover? I wouldn't do that. And the number I have for Royal (which I just used today) is 1-800-272-6229.

If the machine runs...try putting some nail polish remover into the cutting blades while you run it in reverse...that might clear some of the "glue" then put shredder oilf onto the cutting blades for lubrication.....if its ruined give Royal a call at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.

How do I remove paper stuck in my shredder????I have a Royal 10X Cut Paper Shredder. On label it has PCUA:29054E 10x 00324040. How do I take it apart to remove the wedged paper???

You may have to turn it upside down and go to work with tweezers and a utility knife to remove every bit of paper from the mechanism. I have found that 10X rating to be overly optimistic; the equivalent Royal shredder I am using currently groans and complains if more than a few sheets are fed in at a time.

Only works in reverse. how can i fix this problem?

It could be that the cutting edges are jammed with paper. Does the shredder just "hum" or strain when you put it in "forward?" If it does, then a jam is your problem. Unplug the unit from the wall and remove it from the basket/bin. Turn it over and see if it is jammed; you might need to move a flap out of the way in order to see the cutter blades. If it does have lots of paper caught, you can use a pair of needle nose pliers or a regular set of pliers or even a hemostat that you might have laying around. Remove as much paper as possible, plug the unit back in. KEEP YOUR HANDS AND ANY TOOLS AWAY FROM THE CUTTER/SHREDDER BLADES. FAILURE TO DO SO COULD CAUSE INJURY TO YOU OR RUIN THE BLADES. If you are still with me at this point, look for a slot around the blades on the body of the shredder. Using anything you can (even a toothpick should suffice) press down on the little metal piece and turn the shredder on. Using the On/Off switch on top of the unit, try the Forward function. If it still doesn't work you may not have gotten rid of enough paper. There is always the possibility that you can take the easy way out and purchase a new one.

Runs in reverse and forward ,when insert paper blades won't let paper in

unplug it and then use compressed air (duster can used for pc's) spray this into unit and into teeth area. This should dislodge any unseen material.. (TIP - don't put any staples or clips in the shredder) even thou it says you can - this can cause a jam as well as not recognize paper. I recommend you get Shredder OIL to use 1 a month to keep your shedder in good condition

Paper has wrapped around the cutting blades and is packed in tight. How do I clean this?

    • 1 Unplug the paper shredder. Empty the shreds from the collection bin. Pull as much stuck material as possible from the top and bottom of the shredder blades with pliers.
    • 2 Place the paper shredder back on the collection bin base and plug the shredder back in. Rock the shredding direction back and forth between forward and reverse. Pull on the jammed pieces as the shredder shifts between directions.
    • 3 Run the shredder in reverse continuously once the paper jam is cleared. Make two passes across the cutting blades while drizzling synthetic shredder oil. Switch the direction to forward to run continuously for one minute.
    • 4 Lower two sheets of clean paper into the shredder. The paper removes excess oil, metal fragments and debris from the cutting blades. Blast the blades with compressed air when you notice a build-up of small paper scraps that may cause a jam.

Royal 85x crosscut shredder stopped working

Some shredders aren't designed to shred anything more than paper. Credit cards, staples, paper clips and the like could have jammed it up. Try running the shredder in reverse and oiling the blades. More help with paper shredder oil here:

If you can't get the paper shredder up and running, it looks like you might have to pick up a new paper shredder. Paper shredders can be pretty cheap though, great guide to cheap paper shredders here:

Have you "oiled" the machine.... put some shredder oil on a piece of paper and shred this a few times to get oil into the cutting blades and see if that helps.

ROYAL RL170MX Shredder won't shred

Did you ever put shredder oil onto the cutting blades?????
The blades can clog with paper dust and then it can't shred as many papges as it should or even jam should occasionally shred a sheet of paper with shredder oil poured onto the sheet.

Royal 10x Crosscut Paper Shredder (PCUA: 29054E) paper jams.

Try soaking the cutters with soapy water, yes it works. Oil after you are done.

Royal VF 1000, overloads with one sheet of paper

Try pouring some shredder oil into the cutting blades where you insert the paper then run the unit in reverse for a while. Then put some of the shredder oil onto a sheet of paper and try shredding the sheet of paper. Some lubrication on a x-cut shredder does not hurt.

Royal 10X confetti shredder

More than likely, there is a lot of paper debris jammed between the cutters and strippers. If you are handy, try the following.
Disconnect the power.
Disassemble the shredder from the lower bin to access the cutting head. Clear the head of all debris with a small screw driver or ice pick. Reassemble and oil the cutters with shredder oil, being careful not to get any oil on the optics. This should solve the sluggish problem. Oil on a regular basis, before every use.
