Damn that chkdsk happens to me too sometimes..
try using Recuva to restore the files chkdsk destroyed,
if no success try reviling hidden files and look for lots of hidden folders named found.001, found.002, found.003 etc... most of the pictures will be there

Try running the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Comp doesnt boot after installing USB 2 drivers

Hi rogueonline,

Disconnect the external drive from the PC. (It's possible windows registry is messed up).
It sound like your windows system is a bit confused as well. First try resetting the bios. See page 9 in your manual. (Don't forget to set it back to normal). This should allow you to get back into the bios. Go over each setting & adjust as needed.
Make sure your primary hard disk drive is listed in the boot order. Advanced Setup Page 30, in manual. If your windows operating system seem is a bit off (OS not installed correctly or driver software not installed correctly). The over-all function of the system can & will run slow. If your primary drive seem to also run slow, the FAT or MBR can be slightly corrupt which will also slow the drive down including file transfer & eventually the drive will cease to function. (The drive can be repaired by doing a full format through windows).
Do a fresh install of windows, including the full format, (Not a Quick format) on the primary drive. Even though ECS does include the USB 2.0 driver so does windows update service. If your windows was all ready updated & you re-installed ECS's (2003) USB driver, that may have been enough to screw up windows. If you have data on your current drive & need to get that data off & if you have access to another system you can pull your drive & slave it into another system & remove the data. There is no quick fix. Play it safe. Start from scratch. After windows has been installed & you install the ECS driver software, update windows until there are no updates left. I'm sure your system will regain its speed.

Good luck ogueonline!

Hi wayne, I'm thinking you're windows is slowly going. This can happen from installing software, than uninstalling too many times. Windows registry can get messed up & windows startup files can get corrupted. (Video files are part of windows boot process). There is also that one security patch from windows that seems to mess up you're Internet Explorer. I doubt you're video card is bad either. I think you're windows operating system has been slowly going. I read all your posts & feel sure about this. Do you have more than one drive in you're system? If it were me I would do a fresh install of windows with a disk format.
If you have a second drive back up these important folders to you're second drive or to a CD/DVD disk.
C:Documents and Settings User nameApplication DataMicrosoftAddress Book
C:Documents and Settings User nameDesktop
C:Documents and Settings User nameFavorites
C:Documents and Settings User nameLocal SettingsIdentities
C:Documents and Settings User nameMy Documents
Data from any programs you may have installed.

Put you're AGP card back in & set the bios back to [AGP VGA Card]. Than go to page 2.4.1 & set, Onboard VGA to [Disabled].
Load you're windows CD into you're CD-ROM drive & save the bios & exit. The PC will auto restart the PC. As the system starts, press the F8 key every two seconds. This will bring up windows, Please select boot device: Using you're arrow keys high light the CD-ROM with windows in it. Press enter. The Win CD should begin. Format the drive & install windows. When windows finishes turn on windows firewall. (You may have to re-register with Microsoft). There should be a windows screen that allows you to register by phone. Tell MS that you installed a new drive & they'll give you a new key.
Load the Asus CD in & install all you're drivers for the board. Next load you're antivirus software & make sure it's up to date. Don't have valid antivirus software? Download AGV for free, click here to download: http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe
Run windows update service. If you come across .Net framework do not install more than 1 at a time & restart the PC in-between each. Do not install internet explorer 7 or above. Do not install windows media player 11. Wait until you're system is up & running 100%. Same for windows SP3. Do not install, yet!
When finished go to Asus web site & download & install any newer driver software. ASUS P4S800-MX main site:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P4S800-MX&SLanguage=en-us
Re-install you're programs, printer software, games ect. Than copy the folders you backed up over you're new windows.
Again, wait a few days before downloading & installing the windows updates you did not install. Suggest installing 1 at a time & wait a few days before installing the next.

Good luck Wayne!

Mike
