Top and back of Kenmore dryer feels very hot to touch

Hello, I have a Kenmore stackable electric dryer model (970-78712-10) It is installed on the side of my washer, not on top and they are not enclosed. I've had this dryer for about 9 years problem free. Today I've noticed that while the drier is working in the hot air cycle, the top is quite warm to touch. The back edge and back panel are so hot that burn to touch. I never checked this before, so it is the first time I've noticed this. Is this abnormal? I often clean the lint trap enclosure by unscrewing the vent panel so there is no blockage. I would really appreciate a comment.

Thanks so much for the response. I wonder if it could be the vent. We opened the vent half ways out and it wasn't to bad for lint. I also checked the outside end and noticed that the air is blowing out enough to keep the valve opened. I cleaned the vent with a 3 feet brush. It didn't seem to be so bad there either. Could the problem be anything else? When lift the top of the dryer open, I notice that really hot air is blowing up from the back side of the drum. I also should mention that recently I changed a foam piece in the front panel which holds the drum into place(Top half). Any other ideas?
    Thanks again.
    Lilian

It's definitely not the vent. Yesterday we replaced the whole plastic vent pipe with an aluminum one. The dryer continued to feel hot even after the change! :(

I have the same issue, but the vent line is brand new and I took the whole dryer apart, cleaned, vaccumed, and greased moving parts. It's not a venting issue. The heating coil (in the back on our Kenmores) gets way too hot, in fact it had melted the plastic socket that holds the drum in place so I had to replace the socket. Now I run it on non heat cycles only until I solve the heat problem.

I'm guessing either the thermostat is bad, or the emergency high heat safety shut-off, or both. Appreciate any input from someone who's solved this.

This alway in a indication of a venting issue it would seem that it is not in your venting that you can see but it may be plugged up in the wall somewhere in this case you will need a pro. chimney sweep or THE DRYER VENT WIZARD if there is one in your area to come and clean your vents

ELEMENT IS GETTING RED HOT QUICKLY

Hello cubernesis - The cycling thermostat of the dryer may need replacing. There could possibly be a malfunction in the thermostat in the return, so if it gets too hot on the auto dry cycle - it stops and will not re-start until it cools down. This could be caused by either lint or something else clogging the vent - thus causing it to overheat. You should be able to feel the top of the dryer right at the back of the top - near the console right after it shuts off. If it is getting too hot to the touch look to the items I have mentioned. Should you find that these suggestions are ineffective, may we suggest contacting a professional to move forward accurately who will be able to diagnose the problem.

Dryer spins but does not dry clothes

It may not be your heating element. Your dryer lint vent pipe out the back of the machine or maybe out the side may be plugged. You have to pull the machine out and clear that pipe or rebuild it out to a soffit vent or static vent if it is in the attic, or out through your crawl space. This will make a huge difference. If that hot air and moisture doesn't get out of the machine it just goes back into your clothes.
Good luck!!

I need advice on dryer for my kitchen.

This isn't an add its two different units that I have installed and are both condensation dryers. Which in my opinion is better for your needs and lacking venting.....LG and Miele also have 15 cycle so now the decision is what your needs and Budget. Prices range from 700-1500 but well worth the money. Bosch Axxis Condensation Dryer (model: WTMC8320US) you can machine-dry clothes without venting hot, moist air (or indeed any air at all). The Axxis Condensation Clothes Dryer condenses the moisture in the hot air to water and releases it through the water the need for ducting and a blower motor to help expel hot air. Ventless dryers make installation easy, fast, and very cost effective. And since little heat is lost when the air passes through the condensing chamber, it takes very little energy to raise the temperature back to optimal drying levels, thereby saving you energy. The Bosch Axxis ventless dryer features the unique DUO TRONIC system with 11 auto dry cycles that tailor the drying cycle to your clothing. And Bosch's exclusive DUO TRONIC system combines two moisture and three temperature sensors to automatically deliver precision drying. This machine virtually operates at the touch of a button to prevent over drying and damage to your clothes. With the stacking unit I think this is your best option due to keeping moisture, and later mold problems due too condensation. The Ariston Stackable Condensing Dryer ASL75CXSNA is the perfect choice for any home lacking venting capabilities and is the largest condenser dryer on the market, bringing the convenience of a compact laundry system to any home. Asko stackable dryer/Bosch stackable washer compatability

If you arer going to replace the washer with a Bosch Axxis model, it will simply plug into the back of the dryer (if it is electric) because normally the dryers are 220 VAC. Works A-OK.
