Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera
Having gone over a year without a response to my query, I assume my suggestion to get a newer version of ACR solved the problem.

You can purchase an off-camera flash sync adaptor at any good camera store, complete with extension cable. The should work fine.

SOURCE: Nikon D40X inbuilt flash
I just bought a Nikon D40X last week. I just realized that the built-in flash never popped up. So I tested in auto mode in a dark room and confirmed that the flash does not work. (Still does not work after a reset) I am going to call Nikon and maybe I might exchange it for a different camera.

How are you transferring the photos? Are you using a cable, or a card reader? If you are using a cable then most likely the cable went bad. I have a D-1 and a D-2, and I never use the firewire cable. I put the CF cards into a card reader. If you are not using a card reader then try that. You can get a decent one from E-Film or from most any computer store.
One more step to try, did you format the card in the camera when you first loaded the card in? On my cameras you need to format that card to have them work with the camera.
