Question about KitchenAid KSM50PR Professional Series Stand Mixer

Kitchenaid 350 stand mixer power problems

My Kitchenaid 350 stand mixer is approx. 5 years old, and has been used very infrequently (i.e. < 5 to 6 times/year) for "normal" use (cake mixes, etc). Since I last used it about 3 months ago, it's suddently developed an intermittent to constant electrical short whenever the mixer is turned on. It doesn't matter what setting is used (1 - 10), it will run either very slowly and stop after a few seconds, or not turn on at all. There's no electrical wire smell, it was never dropped/abused or otherwise damaged, and the main motor assembly has never been exposed to water. Is this a common/known issue with this model? If I wanted to troublshoot before taking to a repair shop what should i look for? I took the back housing off and didn't see any noticeable wire damage, loose connections, or anything that appeared to be worn or otherwise out of the ordinary. If I need to send for professional repair, can you recommend someone in my zip code (55346)?

Thank you!

I'd check the brushes. The big black screws on the side of the motor casing, easily removed, but becareful when you put them back. Here were some instructions from another site that helped me get them back in right:
The brushes in my model KP50PSBU must be insert in a particular manner in order for it to work correctly. If you remove the brushes and shine a flashlight into the hole, you should see a small detent or "stop" in one corner of the hole. Its a square hole. Match this corner with the corner of the brush which is shaved off. The brush is not square; it has one corner shaved or smoothed down. This allows the brush to fully extend into the hole. If the brush is inserted any other way, it will not contact the motor and will not run.

Possibly the fuse gear has failed from lots of use or overloading. You should be supplying the model number when asking for help with a problem, all models are not the same.

MY kitchen Aide mixer was running alittle rough /loud and now has stop completely. It is approx 24 years old and has never had any problems. It is hard to find a local repair [place. any suggestions

Two things you can do for a 24-year old machine:

1. Replace both motor brushes (Black large plastic Caps on each side
of the Moto Housing). Without these, the motor wouldn't even run.
2. Replace the Worm Gear (the cause of the Rough Loud noises)

Download a copy of the Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com for
your model KSM90.

Also don't forget to tighten all the screws inside the mixers and use
fresh Kitchenaid Grade Food Grease for all the gears.

What kind of grease can be used on a stand mixer after replacing a stripped worm gear? model:K45SS

Food grade grease is what Kitchen Aid put into the gearbox originally. They do supply it as a spare part if you cannot find it as a non Kitchen Aid part.

There are lots of places to be looking, first thing I would look at would be under the rear cover to make sure the two nuts that hold the rear motor bearing housing in place are nipped up. You don't wring the neck on these nuts, if you over tighten them you will deform the rear bearing housing.
If you can find someone local who has been doing these mixers for a while they will be able to give it a once over. It's unlikely to be expensive. Best people to ask is Kitchen Aid, they should know who does their warranty work in your area. If you are in new Zealand it will be me.

When I turn on my Kitchenaid mixer at any speed, it ramps up to high speed and then shuts down after maybe 30 seconds.

You need a reputable repairman. My gears were stripped after trying to mix a very thick dough. It would only work on high speed. After it was repaired.... I still use it, all the speeds work, and that has been 15 years ago. My mixer was at least 8 years old at the time of the "stripping".

You can knead longer than that, but you run the risk of over heating the mixer because at that point the dough is very firm. Your best bet is to knead it by hand.
