NUMBER 8 BUTTON WON'T WORK

Hi,
Warning
In the keyboard test (below), make sure the keys are pressed in the right order. If the calculator fails the keyboard test then it needs repairs. (Ignore the beginning of the post and skip to the last part For Repairs )

You can reset the calculator:

Turn the back of the calculator towards you. Extract the top left rubber pad on the back of the calculator and use a paper clip to press the Reset button. If that does not restore the calculator to health, you should perform the diagnostic tests.

Make the calculator perform a
Self test.
  1. Turn calculator on
  2. Press and HOLD the key [ON]
  3. Press and release the key with "E" to its right (the one before last in first row)
  4. Release the [ON] key.
It tests the RAM and ROM. You will see various patterns on screen. Afterward you should see
IROM OK,
IRAM OK,
HP48GX OK
The self test will continue repeatedly until you perform a
System Halt
  1. Press and HOLD the [ON] key
  2. Press and release the "C" key
  3. Release the [ON] key.
The empty stack should appear.

If you do not see IROM OK and IRAM OK, the calculator requires service.

If the above procedure is successful, you may want
to test the keyboard.
  1. Turn calculator on
  2. Press and HOLD the [ON] key
  3. Press and release the "D" key.
  4. Release the [ON] key
  5. Press and release the "E" key. KBD 1 should appear on the top left corner of the screen.
  6. Starting at the upper left corner of the keyboard, and moving Left to right, press every key in sequence. If you follow the sequence and the keys are functioning properly you should hear a high pitch sound at each press.
  7. If everything is OK, when you press the last key (+) the screen displays KBD 1 OK.
To exit the keyboard test proceed as described above under System Halt.

If you follow the proper sequence and a hexadecimal number appears after pressing a key, the calculator requires service.-

The calculator crashed two times several days ago while I was using it. It worked fine the following day, but after that the screen became very dark. So dark that I need a flash light shining at it to see....

I will address one part of the question only: I will avoid the speculations.

How to change the screen contrast
  1. (TI-Nspire with native keyboard): With the TI-Nspire keyboard in place,
  2. Press the ON button to turn calculator ON.
  3. Press and HOLD the Control key [CTRL]
  4. Press [+] to darken the screen
  5. Press [-] to lighten the screen (Your case)
  6. Stop when contrast is adequate.
  • TI-Nspire with TI84PLUS keyboard: With the TI84PLUS keyboard in place
  • Press the ON button to turn calculator ON
  • Pres the [2nd] key and RELEASE it
  • Press the [UpArrow] of the NavPad to darken
  • Press

I had not used the calculator in a year. I replaced the batteries. The calculator will not turn on.

Here are some quick tests.
  1. Verify batteries are correctly inserted (I have to rule this out) and that the polarity diagrams are respected.
  2. Try to turn the calculator ON with the TI-Nspire keyboard and with the TI84Plus keyboard.
  3. With the TI84Plus keyboard in place, try to adjust the contrast of the screen by
  • pressing the [2nd] key and releasing it.
  • Then press [UpArrow] to darken the screen if it is too light OR the DownArrow if screen is too dark.
If you fail to get any meaningful response from the calculator, put the TI-Nspire keyboard in place/ Make sure you do not press the ON key (put the slide cover to protect screen and keyboard) and press the RESET button on the back of the calculator. For that, use a straightened paper clip.

If all fails, I suggest you reinstall the Operating system. The procedure is detailed in this article.

I did the keyboard test and got the error 0312A. What does that mean?

If you pressed the keys in the correct sequence starting from the top left without skipping any key, then the last key you pressed was not correct. Let me explain. If the key you just pressed corresponds to the one the calculator is EXPECTING you do not get the hexadecimal code of the key. If you get a code displayed, the keyboard is defective. That is what the theory says. And if a keyboard is defective calculator must be sent for repairs (not free.)

But before you do that, try resetting the calculator.
Under one of the rubber pads (the upper right pad when you are looking at the back of the calculator) there is a pinhole. Use a straightened paper clip and press the reset button.
