Hello,You get between 10%-12% out of each.The efficiency rating difference is the flue gas(exaust) temperature! 90% furnace is much lower temp than any 80%.

Furnace has water under it, why? Its a Dayton gas furnace.


There are several questions that need to be answered about what type of system you have, but i found this posting that may help:
As your gas furnace runs, is there water leaking at the base? Is the furnace's air filter wet, too?There are a few things that could be happening here. But if you have a high-efficiency furnace, here's the most common cause: a condensation leak.
We'll explain why a furnace creates condensation, and what's causing it to leak out of your furnace.
Note: You'll know if you have a high-efficiency furnace if:
  • The yellow energy guide tag says your furnace's efficiency is 90% or higher AFUE.
  • The vent/flue pipe is white PVC as opposed to metal.
Why a high-efficiency furnace creates condensation
How in the heck does a high efficiency furnace create condensation/water anyway?
It's all about how the furnace extracts heat from combustion gases.
A lower-efficiency furnace extracts some heat from combustion gases and then quickly vents them out the flue pipe.
But a high-efficiency furnace, to extract more heat, has 2 heat exchangers. These allow the furnace to extract heat from the gases for a longer period of time. This causes the combustion gases to cool and then condense.
That condensation then exits out your home through a drain. But if that water is pooling around the furnace, there's a problem preventing it from draining properly.
Causes of a condensation leak around a high-efficiency furnace
  • Clogged condensation tubing
  • Clogged condensation drain
  • Breaks in the condensation line
  • Issues with the condensate pump (if you have one)
You'll need a furnace technician to diagnose which of these is the issue and then fix it.
Other causes of leaking water around a furnace
If you have a conventional, standard-efficiency furnace...then its flue pipe may be incorrectly sized.
If you have a whole-house humidifier connected to the furnace...there may be an issue which is causing the humidifier to leak into your furnace. Your humidifier should be getting annual maintenance from a professional to prevent this.

Why is water coming out of my furnace exhaust pipe?


When natural gas or propane burns, water vapor is given off within the flu gasses so a bit of condensation in, off and around the flu discharge is quite normal. If it is a high efficiency furnace with the pvc flu pipe, they must be pitched properly BACK TO the furnace so the moisture will drain backwards and out a drain tap at the bottom of the riser. That style of furnace will have TWO drains...one up high for the air conditioner coil and one about 16" up from the bottom of the furnace off of the 'condensing coil' that the flue gasses pass through to extract a much greater amount of heat from the burned gas.

Many flu pipes are installed incorrectly which causes water to drip outside instead of back to the furnace and this usually results in huge icicles hanging off of them in the winter and eventually the partial blockage causes the flu's pressure switch to open.

If you have regular galvanized flu pipe, you have less than a 90% high efficiency furnace and the resultant flu gas temperature is much higher with a much greater quantity of water vapor in it. A little condensation is somewhat normal on the top of the flu cap as the hot moisture laden vapor comes in contact with the cold and dry outside air. If the moisture is all over the galvanized flu pipe in the basement, you are possibly venting into an oversized and unlined masonry chimney. IF that's the case, the chimney should really be lined with a flexible liner and properly connected to the furnace and water heater (if gas fired) with the proper connections and configuration.

Flue gas condensation


The condensation will destroy your heat exchanger and should be dealt with immediately. If you have a 90% efficiency or better (condensing furnace), check the pvc drainage plumbing for a clog. Less than 90% would indicate the furnace isn't burning hot enough, and in that case you should call a qualified technician to at least inspect the heat exchanger and the flame. The condensate is very acidic, and in time eat through the metal of the heat exchanger

I have 2 zone gas hot water heat. When I turn 1st floor zone down to 60 degrees and 2nd floor zone up to 80 degrees why do I get heat on 1st floor.

The electronic ignition system in a gas furnace is a modern development that allows more reliable performance than standing pilot furnaces, provides energy savings and contributes to better furnace efficiency (AFUE). With a standing pilot, found most commonly on older low efficiency furnaces (55% to 65% AFUE is not uncommon), a small gas flame is always burning and is known in the lexicon of American home repair as a "pilot light". The problem with this type of "analog" ignition is that it wastes energy by constantly burning gas and can sometimes be unreliable. These issues have led to the development of electronic ignition systems for mid to high efficiency furnaces that exceed the U.S. government's established minimum AFUE rating of 78%. The electronic ignition occurs typically in one of two ways:
  • Intermittent Pilot, or
  • Hot Surface Ignition The intermittent pilot system uses an electronically controlled high voltage electrical spark to ignite the gas pilot and then subsequently the main burners, when the thermostat calls for heat.
    The hot surface ignition system uses an electronically controlled resistance heating element not unlike a light bulb filament (and shown in the photo above), to ignite the gas burner.
    It is important to understand some of the other components of a modern furnace that you will encounter depending on the type of high efficiency furnace you have. Why? Because they can also come into play in repairing an electronic ignition furnace when it won't run properly. Let's take a quick review of the types of furnace designs and components found in high efficiency furnaces using electronic ignition.

    Honeywell thermostat RTH6300b will not shut off at


    I had this same problem with my 6300B thermostat. I did not see this when I installed the tstat and did setup for it the first time. If you go to page 16 of the install guide, there are instructions for setting up your tstat for your furnace and AC. The setting I had wrong was on page 20 of the guide. It defaults to a setting for a furnace/ac that is less than 90% efficient. When I changed the setting to a furnace that is more than 90% efficient, the fan not turning on or off problem went away. The setting on page 20 should be set to "3" if you have a more than 90% efficient furnace/ac. Hope this helps your problem

    What is the efficiency rating on the Trane model BLU055E936B1 upflow furnace and what new furnaces are available to replace this old Trane furnace without having to change the venting system.


    Chances are you need to replace both the condenser and furnace, then you you should get a varaible speed blower with the new furnace, get at least a 90% gas system with a 16 SEER condenser, save on energy cost as soon as it's installed. Go Get IT

    i believe everything is built like **** today i suggest going for a system by goodman they are very inexspensive and really good warranties
