Hi,
Yes, it could be the cap. but it also could be that the motor is defective or that the compressor is running too hard and overloading the motor...You will have to eliminate the possibilities to find out the problem...

the failure to run the compressor then tripping a circuit breaker indicates either a failed start/run capacitor or a seized compressor motor
for this error ,it would be best if you got in an ac technician to properly diagnose the fault and get a quote

Compressor trips breaker on startup or quickly after

The breaker may be too small. Check the amperage requirements against the breaker size.

The ac trips the breaker in the camper when the compresser comes on

Check that incoming voltage is up to specs at AC unit control box ( 110-120VAC ), and if good, I'd suspect start capacitor for compressor is defective and needs replacing provided compressor is good. Usually a new capacitor is required in most cases. Please don't try changing it yourself if not experienced in that area, as capacitors can give a very high voltage shock, even with power off.. Don't forget to turn breaker off to power source before working on it.

the start capacitor on the motor body is weak, the motor needs this component to over come the air pressure when cycling to re-build the low air pressure, change both the start and run capacitors when doing the start because the other run capacitor is just as old and it will soon fail

Neither A/C compressor or fan coming on in ouside unit.

The bulge is a telltale sign of a defective capacitor along with the tripped breaker. Replace it and cross your fingers.

Trips breaker when compressor comes on

Sounds like compressor's ,start capacitor, may be defective. Might be smart to have someone experienced in electrical check/change it, as it can be very dangerous due to high voltage stored in it.

Compressor kicks in, trips the breaker.

It is a 1977, usually with age the compressor gives out. You should check the power coming into the compressor, going out of the compressor, check the clixon on the compressor make certain the wires are not touching, how long has it been since the capacitor has been changed?

Only fans work on split system model ls-k2463hl earth breaker trips when compresor tries to start I own a Panasonic Heat pump model A18CKP6G with the same problem. The compressor was replaced last June...

Sounds like a wiring problem between the outdoor unit and the house. You would be surprised what I have come across in 30+ years of A/C work.
But it could also be the compressor.

I will need to know answers to the following -

Does the compressor have a soft start (2 wire capacitor looking device that attaches to the run capacitor), hard start (relay and capacitor), or just the run capacitor?

Were the run capacitors and start components replaced when the compressor was replaced?

Is the breaker a GFI breaker, or just a standard breaker?

Rain or humidity is not usually a factor, but it may be something.

Reply back what you find.
