The USB Ports have stopped working. when I plug in a thumb drive or mouse in any of the four ports the computer doesnot respond.
the memory stick flashes once and only once when it is inserted. The laser mouse lights up but doesn't work. Can you help?
Device manager showes the USB ports and USB hubs present and no conflicts.
Both my usb ports stopped working. I thought it was just the mouse, but the printer ,and webcam dont work. When I try to use the webcam,i get the message "webcam not found" although the light on the camera comes on. The led in the mouse doesnt come on. Device manager shows everything OK. Whassup?
I think you might have a loose cononection for the data ports. Try putting a little bit of force on the usb device. Up, down left right. NOT ALOT. If it starts working when force is used, i tihnk you should try to take it apart and resolder the connections. If it dosen't work, uninstalling the driver and installing.

It sounds like these is either a problem with the USB port on the motherboard or with the mouse itself.
Assuming that if a wireless mouse: the batteries are new, the device is actually turned on and the transmitter has been removed from the mouse and plugged into the the USB port and it still does not work, it should be tried on all the other USB ports of the computer. If none work, try on another computer.
This will help determine if the mouse or the computer is the problem. If the mouse does not work on other ports or on the other computer, a defective mouse is likely. If it does work in a different USB port of the original computer, the first USB port is suspect.
If it only works on a different computer, the problem my lie in the setup or BIOS page of the computer. Look for a setting for USB ports. Enable the ports if disabled, and try again. If still no luck, there is some other issue at the motherboard level. Unless fairly new and under warranty, it will probably not be worth trying to fix the problem, when a $20 USB expansion card could be purchased and installed to provide USB connectivity needed.
You could also try connecting a different USB device (if available) to test the USB port. A USB webcam, hard drive, mechanical mouse, etc. are all good choices to test the port. You should indicate or cover any ports that are found to be defective.
One of the USB devices might be overloading the ports. If you can use a non-wireless mouse and keyboard first and then plug the hard drive in. Try plugging the drive into another computer. If you don't have one, maybe check with a friend and make sure the drive does not have any problems. While you are at the other computer, try the wireless mouse and keyboard and see if it works ok on it
Well let me be the first to say I see you have skills. All of your troubleshooting is exactly by the book. The only thing I see that was not checked is the CMOS (BIOS) setup screen to make sure that the USB function is enabled there. Good luck and let me know how it goes, we have a couple of hundred years of experience at FixYa so keep me updated if you have any more problems.
I think the root issue of usb ports not working is a problem with your USB port's drivers no longer communicating with your computer. This often occurs when you install an update to your computer's operating system.
One of the great features of USB devices is they can get power from the USB port. Plug in a thumb drive and it just works. The power for operating the thumb drive comes from the USB port. This works for small devices like a thumb drive but not something big like a scanner. The scanner need its own power supply.
There could be several explinations for what you are seeing. Could be you are plugging in a device which is sucking too much power and the laptop is shutting it down. I would test the port with something small like a thumb drive and see if it works. If the thumb drive works but the other device does not a couple of things could be going on. Maybe the device just need power - is there a way to plug in a power supply? Or maybe the device is broken and shorted out. Does the device work on another computer?
If something like a thumb drive does not work then it is a problem with the motherboard. Could be the USB ports are bad. It happens and there usually is no easy fix short or replacing the motherboard ($$$). Occasionally there is a BIOS setting for the USB ports. A bit of a long shot but worth a look.
A possible work around would be to get a power USB hub. A hub plugs into a USB port and provides 4 or 7 USB ports. Good ones come with a power supply. When the hub is plugged into the power supply it does not draw power from the computer. Might solve your problem.
Device manager shows the USB port if they are attached to you notebook. And in your case they are attached.
So it will show it.
Now in your case the problem is in your USB.
Get it changed. If it is in warranty peroid then dont u take any risk. Let it be replaced. Or give your notebook in warranty period to the company from which you bought.
