Question about Oppo Digital DV-981HD DVD Player

1 Answer

I´ve just purchased a brand new sealed from factory OPPO DV-981HD dvd player, because everybody told that this is a very good player, I first unpacked it, then I took a look on the manual in order to install it properly, and when I´ve finished to install, the disc tray do not open. Do you know wich is the problem, and if I should keep or send it back to the shop? I´m asking you this because this was the last unit available, or maybe It´s better to try with another model. Thank you in advance for your reply! yours sincerely Hugo

Send it back,I would not care if this was the last unit available if it is not working correctly now
why wait for more problems in this unit? Theirs always a Lemon somewhere.
You might just want to Go to Ebay Look under Electronics/DVD players

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

The player won't power off and on. I tryed to play a dvd and it wouldn't load and it is currently stuck in the player as it won't eject the disk. It also smelled like hot wiring

Any kind of 'burning smell' in any electrical appliance is extemely serious, and can be potentially dangerous, depending on the appliance, and its voltage rating. In your case it generally means the power supply has developed a short and its associated protection circuit has also failed, resulting in a high DC output voltage feeding directly across the lower current rails to the motherboard and possibly the rest of the unit.

I doubt this particular player is economically repairable (the cost of parts and labour involved in restoring it to working condition in a service centre would be higher than the retail price of a brand new one; not worth it really since it is not a recorder - there is also a small chance some of the required parts may not be available anywhere), so the only course of action you have is as follows:

You may be able to 'manipulate' the disc tray to get your disc out (this can be done with tools, where you can carefully disassemble and/or remove the DVD deck, then retrieve your disc unharmed - make sure the player is not plugged in when you do this).

The other option is simply to buy a new player - this one is U/S; the extent of the damage to the PSU could be far too severe; and I don't think any workshop would touch it.

Save yourself the financial agony; it is cheaper and easier to buy a new one rather than spend hundreds of dollars in repair costs/modifications to the old one. It is up to you what you do from here. DVD players are great units when they work, but they can be costly burdens when they suffer major breakdowns.

Sad news, but I wouldn't want you to go through this sort of problem with a new player again.

Display is all weird the on/ off is almost a hot pink the open/close light is off

Send the player back to OPPO as they have become aware of this issue. OPPO has a flat $49 repair service for the LIFETIME of the unit after the warrantee period expires. I experienced the exact same issue and it's the main power board. OPPO will provide you with an RMA# when you call them, give them a credit card number for the $49 and then pack the player securely and ship it to them. They pay the return shipping and in about ten days you'll have it back working better than new with new firmware and the latest upgrades as well. You'll have to reset your Region Free settings and all your special parameters but it's a super deal. And they then warranty it for 90 days and if it breaks down at any time in the future again after that, it's still only $49 for another complete fix.

Hi. I´ve just buy a used Pioneer dv 383 and it works OK with Cd´s, but when I try to play a DVD on it, it turns off. Can u help me?

There are 2 lasers in it. One for dvd and one for cd. The dvd lens is overheating and causing it to shut down. Better to get a refund and buy a new one. They are very cheap at WalMart.

How do I unlock my Pioneer DV-310-s so it will accept all dvds, thanks.

Here is how to Make your Pioneer DV-310 regionfree.
Use this link and go there.
Search for file YJA8703A almost in the bottom under DV-310.
Download and burn on CD with nero, make sure the CD is being closed after burning.
The just mount the CD in your DVD player and press play.
#1. Press upgrade.
#2. Wait,don´t touch anything now.
#3. The tray will open after about 5-10 sec, take out CD.
#4. Player will uppgrade under about 1-2 minut, then the tray will close by it self, and the player says "CLEAR".
#5. And now here is the secret. When player says "CLEAR" ,push and HOLD the "enter button on THE PLAYER until it turns off(about 5 sec).
And there you go,standing infront of your brand new Multi regional Pioneer DV-310.

At least this worked great for me.
Good Luck!

Occasionaly a wide screen dvd plays only in full screen

The aspect ratio on your DVD player is not set correctly. Look for a SETUP button on the remote control, there should be something like "QUICK SETUP" or something similar on the setup menu, if not then go to the menu that has the aspect ratio settings listed. Change your aspect ratio to 16:9 WIDESCREEN, and this should solve your problem. Your aspect ratio is 4:3 which is for a regular TV, if the images (especially people) look real skinny and tall on your TV then your aspect ratio is not properly set. Good luck to you!

Make sure none of the Digital or Component Input Assignments are programmed, if you're not using them. Set them to "----". This may help. Some of the Component input assignments may over-ride your other input assignments (perhaps even the HDMI input assignments).
