Yes it would be better to save your data to an external hard drive or flash memory stick. Remember to scan the this data before you copy them back onto your laptop, if the data files are infected with viruses you will infect your laptop again.
If is best to re-install Windows, the installation process will allow you to delete the old partition, create a new partition and then select a full NTFS format, do not do a quick format.

you need to re install from cd select repair option when asked (not to be confused with recovery console).
as soon as you have a clean registry install anti virus like microsoft security essentials or avira and run it. then you can rummage around installing the rest of the drivers and sorting your files

Unrecognized battery

Dell had several recalls on their batteries. You need to contact customer support to see if yours is one in the recall.

Good luck to you and others!

Update Dell Vostro 1000 BIOS now wont turn on, nothing on display

You may be in for some trouble, a failed bios update isn't always an easy fix. if you can find the cmos battery try to remove that for a few seconds. you will also need a disk version of the bios, download that from dell on another computer and copy it to floppy or cd and see if you can boot to that and reinstall the bios.

when you press the power button what happens, does it light up and run the fan? Nothing appears on the screen?

DELL Vostro 1500 causing many problems...

For using xp you must have the correct drivers. These should be available for download from the Dell support website. You may also find updating windows xp will help you may be using service pack one, so make sure all updates are done.

If you have to load drivers you should load the chipset first followed by the graphics then the sound. Check on your hardware list under system in control panel that there are no conflicts.

I hope this is helpful please rate the assistance given.
