Question about Kenmore 25512/ 25513 Progressive Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

My progressive brush motor only works when I've got it twisted to the right, and then not always. Obviously a bad connection. The female part of the connection at the handle is blackened. Is this something we can repair/replace ourselves, and if so, how? which parts do we need

  • I will give you the easiest way I think you van solve this. What I would do is take the wand down to my local used vacuum store and show them the piece with the black on it. If they agree that it should be replaced...which they will, then you can ask them if they carry the part and most likely they do. Sometimes they will have another wand with a new female end already on it and you may be able to buy one already assembled. Almost all the Kenmore canisters have the same wand set up and they are almost all compatible to one another. To be honest I would try to get one already assembled on to the wand as the part wont be much less than buying the wand off of him already done. If you are set on fixing it yourself you can get the part from him and take it home and do it yourself. Just a word of warning , those plastic connections get brittle over the years so be gentle with it at all times.
  • I hope this was helpful to you and if so please rate my answer on you way off our site....Thanks again and good luck.

Why did the brush roller stop spinning?

With the cleaner unplugged, turn the unit over and look inside the opening where the brush is located. Do you see the clogging of the brush with lots of hair? If so, you will need to disassemble it to remove the hair. In any case, you will probably need to take off the cover to see if there is an obstruction jamming the brush. Also, check to make sure that motor for the brush is getting power. If there is an electrical cable on the outside connecting the brush housing to the rest of the vacuum cleaner, check if it is disconnected. When you have the cleaner on, do the lights glow? Do you hear the motor running? Try the above and report back.

Make sure that the dirt bag is empty and that the motor bearings are good. Also check for any debris that may be gumming up motor bearings and forcing it to run slow.

You also can check out the motor brushes and replace them.

My Kenmore canister vac's carpet beaterbrush doesn't work however the mini stair one does is the prob in the extendable pole?

The problem is more likely in the power head itself. If the power nozzle motor runs, but the brush doesn't rotate, then the likeliest problem is a broken or worn belt. It could be clogged or worn brush bearing, as well.
You may able to do a visual check for a broken belt. If not, turn PN so brush is facing up. Try turning the brush by hand. If it turns freely, the belt is broken. If it sticks badly, there's a bearing problem, or excessive thread, hair, or similar items wrapped around the brush and it needs cleaned. It can also be bad or clogged bearings, which will need to be cleaned or replaced.
I generally recommend even simple fixes like replacing a belt be done by an authorized service tech, as misplacement and improper tension can cause belt breakage and/or rapid wear, and even shortened life for the PN motor.
Check the connection where the wand or cord connects to the PN. If you see any discolored or obviously worn terminals, they need to be replaced.
If the motor doesn't run, even after pressing the reset button, then the problem is probably bad/broken wiring, wiring connections, or even a worn out motor.
If you still haven't found the problem, a repair shop can trace the problem and repair it, but it may be cheaper in the long run to buy a new vacuum.

Brush works intermittedly - I've looked at the common solutions listed but none seem to work...shaking it & reseating the canister will get it working again sometimes but obviously that doesn't seem to...

I just had the same problem. I would turn on the vac, and it worked fine. When I turned on the brush it would work for a few seconds then shut off. Through troubleshooting I found out it had nothing to do with a bad power connection. By chance I took off the side HEPA filter to see how it looked. I realized that I have never changed it and that it was filthy. I removed it and turned on the vac, then the brush. It took a few tried, but the brush motor got back to full strength. I reassembled everything and it works fine now. It seems that the clogged filter was causing the brush motor to shut off. I'm running my vac w/o the HEPA filter while i wait for a new one to ship. Hope its the same prob for you!

Belt not moving

Hello,

There are actually two belts on the Dyson DC07. The one belt that you can physically see, and a second belt that connects the clutch assembly to the motor shaft. If you're able to spin the one belt that's attached to the brushes, but the vacuum is not spinning the brush, this can really only be one of two problems. Either the rear belt that connects the clutch to the motor shaft has fallen off, which would prevent it from spinning, or the clutch assembly itself maybe bad. Usually when the clutch goes bad however it will make a terrible grinding noise first.

Here's a video on how you can access your clutch, and inspect the rear belt. Either way you'll need to take it apart to diagnosis it.

Hope this helps you:

Thank you,

Chris J.

Loose electrical contact in extension wand

You have a loose connection at one of several possible locations.Inspect the contacts at the top and bottom of the wand .IF they are black or coppery or look melted, both pairs of contacts, male and female will need to be replaced.
Try to wiggle and twist the wand at top, then at bottom. If this does not reveal the short, work your way back down the hose towards the a vac itself, starting behind the hose handle.

Wish to remove bottom ofpowerhead-Kenmore Progressive 11629912990

I have a whispertone vacuum, different model #, but maybe instructions will be the same. Turns out I didn't need a new belt, just clean out the crud and reset overload protector. The instructions in the manual tell you to remove the light cover and bulb first. To do this, press in and lift both sides. Push in and turn bulb counterclockwise to remove. (you need to do this because the next step involves turning the unit over). This takes you to
Step 2. Unscrew the cover screws ( on either side of bulb).
Step 3. Turn unit over. To remove cover, insert screwdriver at cover tabs on both sides and twist to release tabs.
Step. 4 Turn unit right side up. Press handle release pedal and lower the swivel. Tilt cover forward from back until front snaps free.
Step 5. Carefully insert and twist screwdriver at each brush support to free brush from base.
Step 6. Remove worn belt.
Step 7. Slide brush supports off to check and clean brush support areas.

To replace belt: slide washers and brush supports onto brush assembly.
Install new belt over motor drive, then over brush sprocket.
Snap brush supports into place on base. Be sure brush supports are not upside down.
Line up front of cover and base. Rest cover on front edge of base. Tilt cover to back. Press cover firmly until side tabs snap into place. Replace cover screws, light bulb and light cover.

Beater bar won't turn on

Depending on which model you have, need new belt and/or brushroll. If a brush roll motor, maybe it is bad. If this is a lift-off, check the male and female connection and see if they look ok or are burnt up.

Brush motor doesnt work

The cord at the bottom of the power head neck may be bad. But so could the plug connections in the hose handle, and the cord on the wand. Check both ends of the wand and make sure that the plug ends aren't burnt, if they are replace them and maybe the plug inside the hose handle.
