Remove & replace handle release lever on hoover model U6445, s/n 039900015686

From under the vacuum, there is a tab release that you need to pry out the old part. At this point, based on your serial nuimber, your vac is over 10 years old and may also need the base. The bracket is part of the base and not expensive, but the replacement is involved. Once the vac is disassembled, other things may need to be replaced.

Stand up lever is plastic, broke when stepped on to release handle, can it be repaired, replaced with a better one, plastic breaks too easily?

The pedal release can be replaced but the base will need to be checked for cracks as well. if the base is broken most common is the socket the pedal release snaps into. some of the plastic parts have been made with better materials

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The only thing that I can think of if that the brushroll may have to be rebuilt and new bearings need to be installed on each end. If unrebuildable, then you need to purchase a new one but most are rebuildable. The other thing is to check the motor pulley to see if that spins freely as well. If you have a problem or other questions please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

My old Hoover convertible will not lock in the upright position.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. It sounds to me like you have a broken handle release lever and that would be inexpensive to fix or repair. You are either missing the spring or the handle release lever is broken. Feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area.
