Question about Mitsubishi CS-40503 TV

1 Answer

Our TV will suddenly lose sound and picture. I can still hear it click on and off, but nothing else. If you leave it off for a while the picture will come back for a little bit but not for very long (15 minutes). If it is left off for a day or two, the picture and sound will stay on for about an hour before going out again. It doesn't seem to have any other problems.

I already have the TV in a position where the back could be removed and my father has a lot of soldering experience (I have a little). I'm the type of guy that will refurbish an electric motor myself before buying a new one. I also replaced the engine block in my Acura to avoid buying a new car or paying someone else to do it. I think that removing a board and fixing a couple of solder connections sounds like great news!!

First: I worked on a lot of these sets. They were expensive when new and were very good sets.

If set will work when not used for a while for a hour you have a soldering problem. What happens is the boards were not soldered by hand, they were soldered in a single motion. After years of use as board expands and contracts when hot and cold, bad solder connections develop.

I strongly suspect you have some bad solder connections now. The hard part with this set is it is so heavy and large you have to get the back off and get the board loose to examine the bottom. Once you have it in this position you look at the bottom carefully and bad connections will be clear to see--I fixed dozens of them (one given to me) and average time with board up is under a hour.

How much skill do you have and what are you willing to do?

The more you tell me the better I can help you.

Heard a pop when I turned on tv and now nothing

don't leave it on and have it looked at---most likely is if it uses a lamp that may be the problem but if not it may be in the power supply.

52" plasma tv - turns on - and I hear something reset inside

i hear a clicking noise- the clicking noise is most likely you ballast trying to power the lamp, but failing. this may indicate a defective ballast if you have recenty purchased a new lamp.I recomend you have your lamp tested to help narrow down the cause of the defect. It's highly unlikely for a new lamp to be dead on arrival

Can't get anything on the screen

Unplug the power cord from the TV set and leave it unplugged for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back into the TV and turn it on. It should work. This is not an uncommon problem for the Akai line.

No picture or sound

If you had a burning smell, well the board is toast. These sets are made to replace the entire board at one time. Before installing the replacement module, the picture tube should be checked. A defective picture tube ( such as a G1 short) may cause a failure in the power supply section.
