Hello,You need a domestic EXPANSION tank(extrol) installed in the cold water pipe. When the cold water heats up it becomes larger(expands) and needs a place to go.Right now it is pushing against the relief valve.

I have a Reliance 501 HWH, 15 yrs old. Nary a problem until now. Yesterday, HW was very hot. Today, no HW. I'm thinking of replacing both elements and thermostats due to the age. Sound reasonable?

At fifteen years of age it would be less cost over time and labor to replace the whole tank. How efficient is your old one and being it runs hot all the time you could have a tank that will not last very long anyway. Mine sprung a leak at 18 years and made a big mess.

Try turning the thermostat uo a small amount and see if this makes a difference. I suspect the control board is bad but I would try adjusting t-stat before I spent money on board or service call. Thank you

I have a Reliance hot water tank..great cold water pressure but a dribble of hot in the shower.

Take the hot water faucet apart (with water off) and look for scale or even white plastic.Even if it's a single lever, you might have plugging in the hot water side. If you find white plastic, expect the dip tube in your water heater is falling apart.(Dip tubes direct incoming cold water to bottom of heater) Drain some water from your water heater at least annually to reduce solids in your heater.

My reliance electric hot water heater keeps shutting down. when I push the reset button it goes on and works for anywhere from 1 day to 5 weeks. Where do I look for a solution.

According to Reliance's trouble shooting guide, you may have faulty upper thermostat that is overheating, which is causing the high temp limit switch to open and shut it down. Pushing the reset switch is only a temporary solution until you find out what is causing it to shut down. Is it still under warranty? Call Reliance and find out. 1-800-365-4054

Need to empty reliance 501 hot water heater how?

1) Shut the breaker off to it at the panel. 2) Hook a hose up to it (the bottom has a drain). 3) Close the valve to the water heater (on the cold water supply). 4) Open drain on the bottom of water heater. 5) Open the relief valve to allow air into the tank (it won't drain otherwise - think if you put your finger on one end of a straw - the liquid stays in until you let go). Why are you draining it by the way?

If you reset the water heater the first time you were without, Then odds are it is the water heater. probably an element went back. If the power off check for continuity.
