Disconnect and reconnect did not work. However I tried "search for new hard drive devices" and found it was disabled, possibly due to large use of stick drives. Anyway the windows wizard led me through the commands to enable the drive again. All is good! Thank you.

Well sorry to say, but if the PC doesn't recognise it, you may have a problem.
First, you need to try another USB port on your PC, if NONE of them work, then you MUST try this unit on another PC, if it still doesn't work on another PC, then there is either a: A faulty cable, or B: The unit is faulty. Try new cable, if it is not that then it is faulty, these things frequently go faulty for apparently no good reason.
If it does work, then take it back to your PC and go to device manager remove the entire USB controller layer, instructions below, and reboot, when at next desktop try your unit again, it should work. If not, then it simply must be incompatible with your system.
Remove and reinstall all USB controllers To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK. Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

Usually, external hard drives are plug and play and if ever you need any driver or software, it comes with the drive. Try pulling it out then back again.. While doing that, look at the bottom-right corner of your screen and take note of what the computer says about it.

Hi

A USBFLB80 is not a hard disk controller, it's an external USB hard drive and does not require any driver when used in Windows ME/2000/XP. This device is plug and play in Windows XP providing you have a working usb port to plug it into.

Need to purchase cord that will allow me to go from firelite to usb for new mac computer

Along with the Firewire port, there should be a standard USB 2.0 port on your drive. In that case, any standard USB cable will do. If for some reason there isn't a USB 2.0 port (?), you can purchase
a USB/Firewire adapter for about $1.50 at Monoprice.

Adding to ubuntu desktop

it could be that power isn't sufficient on the USB connection. you might need to plug in your AC adapter.

Also this drive has both FireWire and USB ports on it.

To get it working, make sure that the AC adapter is supplying power, and that USB is connected correctly, then re-boot.

Ubuntu should recognize the drive.

Command line tools that may help are

lsusb

this shows which devices are connected via USB to your computer.

dmesg | less

will help you look for the drive's identification and recognition by the computer, providing information such as vendor strings, capacity, and device assignments.

Good luck.

Hard drive is not showing up on my computer after working fine for almost 2 years.

Hi,
1. Please check your harddisk with any other computer.
2. If not working, then please change the power adaptor and try again connecting to your system.
3. Try changing the data cable as well and check
4. If still your problem not solved, then please consult the vendor from whom you purchased the product for claiming warranty (if applicable)

I hope this is helpful in resolving your problem.
Thanks

What kind of external power supply does it need if

Portable HDDs normally have a dual cable USB with the thicker cable being the power and data and the thinner one power only. Many manufacturers now make PSUs with USB sockets

Cable has changed it's policy and standards many times in the past

if you have a cable modem you will most certanly need to decide
if you're going to be using the cat5 ethernet connection or the USB connection cable

if you have an onboard ethernet adaptor or a PCI ethernet adaptor
it's best if you use the cat5 connection of the cable modem

if you have no ethernet adaptor , you will need to use the USB connection of the cable modem
and connect that to your computer , which will most deffinately require that you have working
USB ports and at least service pack 2 loaded to enable USB 2.0 , and a driver from the cable
modems driver CD

if you're using a router , use the cat5 connection of the cable modem

( make sure you contact your ISP to walk you through the setup proceedures )

Intermitant power

You are describing the symptoms of a classic cable short. My guess is the power plug cable on the A/C power adaptor or the socket it plugs into is damaged. Try holding the plug still and wiggling the power cable back and forth, chances are that will recreate the problem. -If you have basic tools and solder experience you can purchase a replacement plug, cut the old on off and attach the new one. -If you don?t have the time or inclination to fix it you can just purchase a replacement power supply. If it doesn?t appear to be the power (or if you?re not using the A/C power adaptor) it may be the USB cable or its socket. -Try a new cable. -Try a different USB socket; they are surprisingly easy to damage.
