Question about Sta Rite 1 Hp Sta - Rite Abg Swimming Pool Pump

1 Answer

I have a older spa with a Sta Rite pump motor. Without removing the damaged pump I was able to see the model number of the pump through a mirror. I beleive it reads K48M5A3, is there any way that you can confirm this model number.

That would definitely be the model number. The K indicates Capacitor start and run, the 48 indicates the frame size, and the "M" indicates horsepower (1.5 hp, in your case). If your replacing the motor, make sure you get the same Horsepower and Service Factor ratings. Hope this helps. When the pump nears the 15 minute mark, check the housing to determine whether it is running hot. Also listen for changes in pumping sounds as something may be causing restriction.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Something is causing the pump motor to overheat and shut off to avoid permanent failure.

The motor is likely failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft to see if it is damaged, bent, or the bearings failing or seized.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced.

*All of this assumes this is an older/existing installation that has worked properly in the past and is just now showing signs of failure. If this is a new install look at your line voltage versus the voltage the motor is set to accept. If feeding 115 to a motor wired to be on 230 you will also get the situation you describe.

What spa pump replaces the Sta Rite model # K48M5A3

That model number you gave is the motor model number. I can however tell you that motor is a 1.5hp motor. So if your just looking to replace the motor make sure you get a 1.5 hp, with the same service factor as the old one. If your looking to replace the whole pump, then technically any 1.5 horse pump will be fine, but there are several factors you should consider. For example if your running popups, or water features, you want a medium or high head pump. There are many different makes and models of pumps out there, so you have many choices. without knowing your application, hard to recommend a replacement. Also depending on your local, suppliers in different parts of the country will carry different equipment. Hope this helps. Tring to take the pump face off the motor

You have to remove the back cover from the motor. Next loosen the capacitor. Put a 7/16" wrench on the shaft and the pump impeller will screw off by hand.
