Why does my laptop keep shutting down after a brief moment of inactivity? When I turn it back on and log in, everything I had open is still there. Thanks.

Thanks a lot Shiela. I've changed the settings and was surprised to find them all set at 1 minute. Never had this problem before and I've used this laptop since about April. Don't know how or why the problem started happening. I'll wait a while and see if this does the trick before accepting your solution. Thanks again. This has been driving me nuts for a few days. :-) Cindy

P.S. -- some recent research on the net suggested this might be a fan or heat problem. What are thoughts about that? Thanks again!

  • Cindy Ard Oct 12, 2010

Seems to have worked, Shiela. Wow - thank you sooo much! This is the first time I've used this site and I'm thrilled!

Yes. Fixed my problem and I couldn't be happier! Thanks.

It is not that the laptop shuts off, it just goes into hibernation. This is a power saving mode whereby it saves power so that the battery lasts that much longer before being recharged. A good thing, as even during inactivity it is consuming power. The LCD is on, the HDD may be running, and so on.
However, if you do not like it then you can change it. Go to Control Panel->Power Options. Here you will find many options as to how the laptop should behave 1. when it is connected to the mains and 2. when it is running on its battery. So please set the parameters as you feel comfortable with. It is a hit and trial thing initially till you know what you are doing.

    You are welcome, Cindy.

That also is possible. But you must first try the Settings solution. If that does not work then we may have to seek professional hardware help (I hope not.)

My screen just started shaking back and forth. All connections are good , if I shut it off and then back on it will be OK for a while then does it all over again. Any ideas

Assuming this is a Desktop PC, I would shut the system down and disconnect the power plug. Then if you feel qualified, I would open the case and look for loose or clogged cpu/video card heatsinks & fans. Especially so if you have a dedicated video card with a fan. They can seize and cause a heat issue. Turning your system off and on gives it a moment to cool down, allowing it to work for a brief period of time. If you are sure of the connections and have no bent or pushed pins in the connectors and you don't figure this one out quickly from a visual inspection, I would not keep powering it on, and would seek out a certified PC Tech.

Why does my computer keep randomly shutting down?

That used to happen to me when too many applications or screens were left open. Turn it off completely after closing everything down. Give it a moment and start it up again. Just remember to ourge it and close things down on occasion, and hopefully that will help you. This was me using a MacAir, and the same in past on other laptops. Good luck.

Go into system, find the wi-fi adapter and open it up. Choose uninstall and click on it. If windows asks you if you want to remove the software from the hard drive say no. Wait for uninstall to complete than shut down the computer, shut down, not reboot. Wait a couple of minutes than turn it back on, sign in and let windows find and reinstall the driver. It now should work. 9 times out of 10 this corrects this issue.

Keeps shutting down

Does the Blue screen appear before it shuts down? If so, what info does it give? What programs are you running, games/internet surfing, when it shuts down? How long has it been since you have cleaned it(compressed air)? Are you blocking the air vents, either on the back, sides or bottom of the computer?

Screen will not stay lit

Check in the POWER OPTIONS section of the control panel if the display timeout for inactivity is too short. This is ONLY if the machine remains running.

If the whole unit is shutting down then likely your charger is not being effective. This problem can be with the charger OR the charging system on the motherboard of the laptop.

Standy By Going off/Computer shutting down

The presentation power scheme is used when you are giving a briefing using the PC as your slide show. So the presentation power scheme will never shut off the monitor or the hard drive, don't want it to shut down in the middle of a briefing. However, leaving it in that state for long periods of time may cause the CPU to overheat and shut itself down for protection. A better scheme for quick boot up would be Home/Office. Turn monitor off after 20 minutes and "never" for hard disk. This way it will save energy (therefore heat) and you will have a quick boot up. If you are using XP Pro, there is also an option to automatically put it in standby when you close the lid of your monitor. Hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know... Please rate this solution before logging off.

How to log off

If you log off you only close your user session under windows, not turn off the computer.

If you suspend you turn off almost everything in the laptop like hardwire, cd or dvdrom and most peripherals but the computer stays on the consuming power.

If you hibernate what windows does is to store all in memory in a temporary file in the hard drive and turn off all the computer so when you turn it on again it will be as you last session with all your programs and documents you left open.

And if you turn off the computer it will close all your programs, close windows and turn off all the hardware.
