Question about Washing Machines
The make and model number of the machine is not specified but it sounds like it is a belt-drive top loader. The problem is in the gearcase assembly with the agitator gear not meshing with the sector gear. It is possible that the agitator gear spring is broken or weak enough to fail in pushing down the agitator gear to mesh with the sector gear. This is not an issue of the motor if you can hear the motor run during the failed agitation. The only viable solution is replacing the gearcase assembly or replacing the failed component inside the gearcase assembly if it's still available in the market.

Hi, there are only two problems associated with agitation after water fill up in washing machine, it could be the belt, or the motor all the together. An appliance repair professional will be able to properly diagnose the problem after having access to the machine directly. The belt is relatively inexpensive, and if you're handy, you may even be able to replace it yourself, with help. Repairing or replacing the motor is more intricate, and will require a professional.
