I've had mine fixed once and it just developed the same problem again. I gave in and purchased a DSLR, though I would like to have this one working again as a backup. Is there anything I can do other than sending it off to the repair facility again?

Camera doesn't get Info Signal from battery thats why gives such message. One solution is to deattache battery for couple of hours and try again.
2nd is that camera has hardware problem and requires qualified technician to repair it though its not big repair.

You can attempt to fix an InfoLithium battery which has developed passivisation by a process of charging and discharging several times.
try this while the camera is turn off.
let me know the outcome.

''for use with compatible battery only''

This appears to be a common fault. You can look up similar problems in fixya with the words "Sony" and "for use with compatible battery only". It would appear to be a logic fault in the battery system somewhere. Here's a couple of solutions with merit that appear elsewhere......

Solution 1)
I took out the battery from the camera; then I made a short-circuit with a small cable between all the three electrical contacts in the bottom of the battery. Then I put the battery into the camera; the camera didn´t turn on. I took the battery out again from the camera and placed it in the charger supplied, in a few minutes the light was off. I placed the battery in the camera, and ... I´m working well with it! (5 people thought this was helpful)
Solution 2) please remove the battery while pressing and holding the power button for 1 min. plase make sure that the battery supplied for yer camera is an NPBG1 original sony battery.

A final health and safety word - take care when shorting out batteries - they can still give a shock. If you work from the assumption that your battery is currently unusable, then these solutions might work...... or you'll end up with a shorted useless battery (i.e. not really any worse off than now). If you find a better workaround - please post it.

What does "for inoLithium battery only" mean?

Is it a Sony battery. I had a similar problem on a similar Sony that I fried using an aftermarket battery or at least that is what Sony said caused it. Especially if it is an info battery.

Sony t30 LITHIUM BATTERRY

It is possible that the battery is defective. This is a common cause for what you are describing. To verify this, you will have to try another battery. You can take the camera to the nearest Sony service center to verify this if you don't want to try a new battery first.

DSC-F707 camera cuts off after 10 second , just bought a new battery.

I also bought an aftermarket battery for my F707 on Ebay and got the same "for info...." message.
I contacted the seller and they sent me a new one and it worked, don't see a way around it.

Power won't stay on

camera needs to be reset...but not gonna be easy

take batteries out...hold down power switch for 15 seconds...then put batteries in and restart

if camera works...go straight to menu and reintialize all functions

this is a firmware/software problem that is not easily fixed...and Sony wants $91 to fix a $100 camera

keep repeating this until it works...may take numerous attempts...but this is how I got my camera running again

Battery

The new battery may not be an original Sony infolithium type which has internal and interactive circuits. These infolithium types constantly informs you about the battery condition. The only way is to try another battery. Sivaram.V
