Question about HP PC Desktops

2 Answers

While in the middle of a system restore on my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop with windows Vista my husband shut it down thinking it wasn't working right and now all it does is turn on and tries to boot up but it can't and shuts down and turns on again and does the same thing. I performed a hard disk comprehensive test in the set up screen and the hard drive passed. What do I do now as the problem is still happening...it won't boot up. Earlier in the week several windows/vista updates occurred. I was doing the system restore to a time prior to the window/vista as my Adobe PSE Editor was not loading the layer styles as it could not find the files even though they were there. My husband thinks that Windows Vista crashed. I have recovery discs. Do I do that now and how do I do it? Thank you Michele

The best thing is to put in the dvd of vista, and erase the partition vista was in (carefull, if you did not move the my documents and personal stuff, those are errased as well, in that case a install over the existing vista is recomandable d=thus replacing corrupted files.

Get the vista disc and put it in, you can perform a system restore again with the cd / dvd even thought the system restore didn't complete last time.

HP pavilionA1217n fans stay on all the time never shut down

A few problems have arose from upgrading your Windows on HP machines. A HP laptop I used to own did the same thing to me when upgrading from Vista to 7. I would recommend looking for updates on HP's website. If you cannot find any, which I wasn't able to, I would use a program called Speedfan.

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php.

I hope that helps.

1) HP Pavilion a6300f went dead only fans spining, replaced mother board with same make model, now ssytem boots but windows don't come up. 2) tried up grade from Vista Home to Vista professional to save...

For the first one, you need to enter BIOS and set the HDD settings. Maybe you can automatic detect it once and then the system knew where to load system from. If it can see the hard disk and reads it but no operating system found, then you may need to check the operating system on your hard disk.
For the second one, I do think it is better to upgrade to a upper level OS such as Windows 7. While you have Vista you will have better deal with Windows 7. If you do have a agreement with Microsoft to have newer OS for free in a certain period, you can get Windows 7 for free. If you don't have that agreement, you can get Upgrade version of windows 7 with a huge discount if you have Vista.
You can actually back up your data to an wim file on vista and restore all the data and settings after the upgrading. But be sure to keep a full backup of your hard disk and everything just in case.
You can enter BIOS and make sure booting from CD first. Then there is a key you need to press very early in the booting process to launch the recovery. There is also a factory default restore you can use. Did you call HP to find out what the key is and how to use factory default restoration? You can always plug the hard disk to other computer to back up the data and then restore to factory default and put the data back.

If you can boot into safe mode, then once in safe mode open system restore and then restore to a couple days prior to the install of the hp drivers. This should fix the problem. If you need to know how to get into system restore let me know your operating system (Vista or XP)

Right click the power icon in the system tray (should look like a little plug with a lightning bolt on it.)  Click on "adjust power properties."  Click on the "advanced" tab, then where it says, "When I close the lid of my portable computer," select "Do Nothing."
