For a cd/dvd dual lens there r 2 lasers & thus 2 pots on the back of the laser lens. If u have problem with running dvd's then only tweak the dvd pot in forward direction a bit.
Tweak the dvd laser via forward rotating the potentiometer (preset). Do not over tweak the laser. You can also use digital multimeter to check the value of potentio/pots meter before & after adjusting it.

If the problem is fixed then u can update the firmware too for latest support.

Else the better way is to visit a technician/engg. or to purchase a new one.

    it's raman101 back here:

Note: This process is applicable to all cd/dvd laser lens repair.
Even for gaming consoles like PS1/2, XBOX etc assuming u have already taken the laser lens out of the console casing.

+ Your dvd writer may be a little different in it's design.

    1. First of all, take out ur cd/dvd writer from the pc cabinet.
    2. Open the four screws located on back of ur dvd writer & flip the same screw side outwards.
    3. Move the tray out by pinning in a needle like substance into the small whole available on the front side just below the tray.
    3. Now take out the front cover (on which the dvdrom, rw, disc rewritable, light scribe etc is written) by pressing the two buttons available on sideways of the casing left & right front near front.
    4. To fully take out the dvd tray, u need to concentrate on the 2 pins available on left & right inside where the tray is blocked by them.
    -------------------------------------------------
Clean the laser head & assemble the dvd system, it may fix ur problem. Otherwise move on further.
    -------------------------------------------------

    5. Take out the PCB/PBA(Printed Board Assembly) by unscrewing all the screws available on it & do remember to carefully take out all the ribbon cabels attached to it.
    6. Unscrew the 3/4 screws(all) available on backside of the laser lens assembly (i.e. at the end of the 2 lens rods on which laser lens slides) to take it out.
---------Hoping u have carefully detached the laser assembly out of ur dvd system.-----So shall we move on....

    7. Now u need to find out 2 potentiometers available on back of the laser lens.
look : A round circle/screw with 3 ends, 2 on one side & 1 on other. Basically it is a resistor which changes value on rotating it clockwise & anticlockwise.
    *
    * * 3 ends around the screw.
For a dvd laser lens i.e. dual lens, the lens assembly is having 2 pots meter.
potentiometer = pots meter = preset. That we call it.

    8. So u need to erect the laser by increasing it a bit at a time.
Rotating clockwise means increasing voltage & thus solving ur problem. Remember not to over tweak it.
For this, take out ur digital multimeter & set it on resistance i.e. in ohm's at 1000/2000 so that it can read higher value's of resistance.
If u have problem reading only dvd's then only change the value of dvd preset & not of the cd preset.
Put the two scrobs black&white of the multimeter at the 2 ends of the preset which are located on same side to get a reading in resistance/ohms. Note the reading or u can even mark the starting location if u want to get back at the starting point where u have started from.
*********Remember not to over tweak the preset.
Now check out the dvd preset out of the 2 preset available. This cd & dvd may be printed near the preset otherwise u need to check it urself. The preset may be placed at different location's for different model's of the dvd laser lens.
Tip: If u rotate the cd preset a bit counter clockwise, then neither the cd nor dvd is going to rotate/spin. But counter clockwise rotating the dvd preset means the dvd laser becomes week & no more dvd can be run but cd's can be run.

------Hopely u may get success in getting the right preset. If not then do rotate both preset a bit clockwise i.e. 100 or 200 ohm's of resistance at a time.
A bit means a degree or a gauge of a hair.

    9. Set the whole assembly & run the dvd writer.
Danger: Not to look at the red laser as it's quite dangerous.....
+ Do increase a bit more & more until u succeed in erecting the laser.
Remember not to set the dvd/cd laser preset resistance to zero (0) this can damage the laser lens dvd section.

    10. I know this all is not sufficient to u guys, it takes a lot of experience to correct the problem. Not only this i know one of u guys may not even understand my tech. language. Sorry for this :-] But i really want to help all of u for free.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is assumed that ur dvd laser lens is having problem & not the other circuit's of the dvd system. The above guide is only for laser erecting.
    -------------------------------------------------
How to check if ur PBA Integrated Circuit i.e. ic's is having problem......Put ur finger on all the ic's one by one & check if anyone is more hot/shorted within...... You need to replace it with a new one or from the old dvd writer of same brand. For bthis u need a hot gun (to remove the mounted ic).

    part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk3E1P8Rp...
Checkout google, utube, metacafe, torrent, limewire etc to get more information on this topic.

If ur problem is fixed then plz. do download the latest firmware available on the website of the product u r using. Run a virus scan & flash ur. dvd writer.
If anyone needs more help then contact me...........Indian....

plz. don't blame me if ur dvd writer got crash. Do it at ur own risk.
or simply refer to a tech or purchase a new one.

I really like to thank fixya as it provides a tech platform & share user personal reviews.

That could only constitute to proplems within the writer, possible circuitry or laser malfunction. the best thing is to get it checked by a technician. I assume that you have tried different dvds on your machine because some dvd writers do not recognise certain dvd formatts. thanks

There has been lots of problems going on about DVD drives not reading DVD's but reading CD's. So at this point, all i could say is to get a new DVD writer.

SOURCE: acer extensa 5620 notebook dvd-cd rom doesn't read

go to device manager under System Properties. Locate DVD/CD Drives, expand it, select your drive, right click and then left click on properties, select the General tab and check the state of the device IT SHOULD indicate the device is working properly, if so or if not, select the Driver tab unomstall the driver, reboot, see if Windows will reinstall the driver as it should recognize the device as a new drive. If not return to the device manager and reinstall the driver.

I have a del studio 15 ....dvd writer is buil in..........when i insert any cd its reading as blank cd.........when i try to acces through MSDOS.....error pops as incorrect function

This is due to dusty or failed Laser head inside the drive. Try cleaning the Laser head with a soft cleaning cloth or with a cleaning kit. If it still does'nt work, that means, its failed. In that case, you may require an external CD/DVD writer, because, Laser head replacement cost would be more than external CD/DVD writer.

Good Luck.
