Question about Canon PowerShot SD500 / IXUS 700 Digital Camera
My nephew broke the lens cover. So parts of it are missing and now I get a shadow on the left bottom corner of pcitures. I am going ot order a new lens cover, but not sure how to install it. Suggestions. I have an SD500 with a lens cover issue as well. Looking for some ideas...
As I have seen several times in these forums, digital camera owners often elect to order camera parts in order to save money on repairs but then they do not know how to procede properly from there.
Though it may seem a simple matter (and indeeed may be) digital cameras can be complex mechanisms and they are very small, often requiring specialized tools. To make matters worse, Canon does not offer ANY instructions or technical support with these parts. Thus you are on your own in installing them.
If you know you are capable then by all means make the repair and save yourself some $$ in the process. If you are at all unsure how to procede however I would leave the repair to a trained technician - either at the Canon Factory Service Center or at another camera shop.
Based on my experience, however, local shops typically charge from 50% to 100% more for repairs than the Factory Service Center (FSC) does. And lastly, if you cannot repair the item on your own and have to ultimately send it in to the center for a repair, you will end up wasting money on the part as it is FSC policy not to use customer purchased parts.
So think about it carefully before you make your final decision. If your camera is out of warranty you might be better off taking advantage of Canon's Loyalty Program which offers upgraded refurbished cameras at discounted prices as an alternative to fixing your camera. For certain models the upgrade price is lower than the repair cost. If you haven't done so already, call Canon's Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 and see what your full range of options may be.
Hope this helps.
