I have owned mine for many years, and have not read nor heard any rumor to lead me to believe this. If you find any proof to this, please message me through this website, because I would like to be able to do the same as well.

If your set is displaying the "Protect" display on the display, it means that your player has a serious issue or failure. It is possible that your output has failed and you will have to take the set out and disconnect the output stage. The main feed voltage to the output IC must be disconnected and the set powered on again. You must attempt to do this only if familiar or else take helpt and identify with this advice. Once the IC has been identifed replace after you find if any speakers also have shorted. replace and test. If your output seems fine , a possible short on the drive board of the cd or the cd processor stage can also be deffective. Hope you get this right, Helpful? Good day
1. The display (located by heater controls) 2. The tuner (located under dash, above and to the right of the accelerator pedal 3. The EQ on some models and tape deck on others (located in center of dash)
Radio should work with tuner and display minimum If the tuner is gone you are better off going aftermarket
It sounds like you have a newer portable minidisc player, and an older deck. There were several upgrades over the years for ATRAC files, and some of the newer recording formats are not compatible with older players.
if the remote makes it work and it plays ....if all functions work other than display check for bad solder joints on the display pay attention to the ones on the corners if the unit is or was a tight fit in the dash its possible that the unit got a little stress and broke loose from the board .... if there is a white powder look in the display it probably bad... the silvery black in the corners is normal
