Hi clean pilot light and change the thermocouple , you will have to remove the gasfire to get to the boiler if unsure best get a gas fitter to do this as this is not easy to explaine , simple job but you have to know what you are doing , it might be you need a service on the bbu and the gasfire then the thermocouple could be done at this time.
Assuming you are using natural gas to light the fire in your fireplace, is the pipe black iron gas pipe, regular galvanized pipe, or copper?
Is there a cut-off valve probably located just before the chimney, that is in-line with the pipe?
You do understand there is no fire in the pipe, but gas, right?
Removing natural gas pipes that are not properly isolated from the rest of the gas pipes is not a task for someone with no experience in this area.
Sometimes the gas must be shut off at the main, and then all your pilots will go out inside the house, in your range, hot water heater, etc, assuming they run on natural gas.
The excess gas in the pipe must be bled to the atmosphere if the main must be shut off, and then the proper pressure must be established prior to lighting pilots and/or appliances.
I highly recommend that you call a service man from a gas company to come out and do this for you. He will have the proper equipment and gauges if they are needed.
