This is the procedure for getting to the starter/recoil unit if you care to.
Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #25 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-25 screw inside the drum. A long thin-blade screwdriver may also work. It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. Next, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a dull flat-blade chisel and hammer unless there are bolts. then use wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face. After getting that off, remove the Torx screws holding the cover to the engine. The starter unit should be mounted inside as it mates with the top of the flywheel to start the motor. Remember to preload tension (5-7 turns) on the starter unit. Make sure the handle is installed. Jam the unit with a screwdriver or clamp it with vise-grips so you can insert and tie off the new rope. Then remove jam device and let recoil pull your new rope into place. Reassemble and you are done. Disassembly requires Torx head drivers T-20 and T-25.

How to fix the recoil


first you need to remove the recoil from the motor,usually 3 to 4 screws or bolts. then look on the underside where the rope pulley is and see if you can tell if the spring is broken ( one end breaks off 99% of the time) if that's the case you will have to replace the spring first.check that out and let me know.

OK first remove recoil unit off motor, Whats the pull start.
Next pull the rope all the way out.Watch the direction the rope pulling is turning. When the rope is pulled as far it can be put something in to hold pulley where it is. Cut off rope knot and remove rope.Then hold pulley remove what is holding it from moving then continue turning rope pulley in same direction until it stops.Then turn opposite way to line up hole in pulley and hole in metal shield and block. Then slide rope through holes and tie knot tight. Release pulley slowly and rope is going to retract just like new...

The pull cord hasn't snapped it just wont recoil! is this an easy fix?


Sounds like the starter spring has broken, remove the three torx screws securing the starter and remove the starter, prise off the r clip holding the pulley and pawl on ( note the orientation of the clip on the pawl ) remove the pulley, the spring is in a cassette, remove the cassette and replace with new, refit the pulley, make sure the pulley locates properly into the hook on the starter spring, re fit the pawl and r clip, enter the cord into the cut a way in the side of the pulley, now wind the pueey around to tention the spring.

Husqvarna 128cd starter rope will not retract


remove recoil starter ,three screws hold the cover on,two from the top and one on the bottom.check for broken recoil spring or jamed pulley.

Recoil pulley assembly keeps binding. Rope stays in pulley, but won't retract. Must remove motor housing , loosen 3 pulley hold down guides, & uncock the pulley. spring tension on recoil is fine....


Have you ever replaced the recoil rope, if you had is it a larger rope then the one that came with it? If so, that could be the cause of the binding. I had that difficulty once.

Recoil starter slipping how do i remove it for inspection


There are usually three or four bolts that hold the starter mechanism onto the machine top cover. These may be located under a plastic trim over the motor - you do not state what machine it is but these instructions woyld cover most makes.
Should you need to get into the recoil starter mechanism itself, you are looking at a messy frustrating job, and if you had to put a price on the hassle that it is, it is probably better to pay somebody else to do it. That said, after having removed the starter cover with the cord and pulley inside. Tthere may be a plate holding down the cord pulley, remove it and carefully lift out the pulley, try not to dislodge the recoil spring as this is where the frustration part comes in. Remove the old cord and insert the new cord end into the hole and copy the old knot - pass the other end of the cord through the eyelet in the cover. N.B. At this time take note of the direction that the recoil spring coil is orientated. Wind about 3/4 of the cord around the pulley and attach the start handle to the outside end of the cord. Carefully fit the pulley over the spring and place the cord into the cutout in the pulley. Wind up the pulley so that it engages in the curl in the inside of the recoil spring and further wind up the pulley in the opposite direction of the normal pulley start pull, holding the cord in the little cut-out so that the cord does not wind up as you wind the spring. It probably takes about 5 extra turns on the pulley to get the recoil tension right. Always hold the pulley in place to prevent the spring from jumping out. Release the cord so it can retract and replace the retaining plate. This is all if the spring does not jump out - which it so often does.
If the spring jumps out, hold it by the inside portion and start winding it up, pulling it tight to keep the coil small enough to fit back into its receptacle, . Once the spring is wound up and will fit into its position the problem starts. I found that gripping the spring with an alligator jaw vice grip will allow you to replace the spring and carefully release it without it going wild again, engaging the outer hook in its retaining slot or around its peg. Trying to feed the spring into position coil by coil seldom works, it has to be wound up outside and then inserted, especially on a small motor.
This procedure is as difficult to explain as it is to carry out. I have done many cord replacements and always dread the next one. If you have any problems, feel free to come back to me.

Starter cord jammed on my mcculloch cabrio 433l strimmer, only pulling a few inches


First remove the spark plug and see if the starter can be pulled without the plug in place. If it cannot, any job that involves a recoil starter is a messy frustrating job, and if you had to put a price on the hassle that it is, it is probably better to pay somebody else to do it. That said, remove the starter cover with the cord and pulley inside. If there is a plate holding down the cord pulley, remove it and carefully lift out the pulley, try not to dislodge the recoil spring as this is where the frustration part comes in. Check the cord is not off the pulley or is frayed and caught on something. See if the starter will operate when it is removed from the motor.
If you need to renew the cord, insert the new cord end into the hole and copy the old knot - pass the other end of the cord through the eyelet in the cover. N.B. At this time take note of the direction that the recoil spring coil is orientated. Wind about 3/4 of the cord around the pulley and attach the start handle to the outside end of the cord. Snow blower recoil rope broke tied back up and now will not recoil


Unless the recoil spring is broken, then you may have neglected to pre-load the recoil spring. With the recoil unit off of the motor, wind the rope fully around the pulley. Then, while keeping the rope fully wound, turn the pulley about 5 times around in the direction that would push the hope out through the hole. At this point the recoil spring will be trying to spin. Without losing that tension, push the end of the rope out through the hole, thereby putting a bit more tension on the recoil spring. Tie on the handle. Now, when you let go of the rope, the spring should hold the handle snug against the hole. An alternative method is to use a rope about 2 to 3 feet longer than the original. Wind it fully around the spool and put the end of it through the hole. Now pull the extra length through the hole until the tension is sufficient. Cut off the extra length and tie on the handle.

Pull start on my Toro snowthrower (snow master 20 - model #38020) it wont recoil itself. I removed the starter housing but can not figure out how to get the pulley and starter recoil spring out/off of the...


Its basically the same....best bet is to just buy the new pull start mechanism...they are pretty cheap, and they go bad on those units all the time.

Recoil assy won't fit against motor.


suggest as you try to align the pulley to the engine, that you pull the recoil rope a small amount. Many times this will align the mechanisms and allow further installation.
