Question about Brother HL-4070CDW Printer

2 Answers

I get a light gray streak down the right side of every printed page. The streak is about 1/2 inch wide, with the right side of the streak slightly darker than the other. The rightmost 1/2 of the page (between the streak and the edge of the paper) is clean and white. Or this could be a pale gray haze that appears on the left side of the page and stops about 1/2 before the right side of the page. My printers settings show drum unit 85% remaining and all the other items (belt, PF kit, Fuser, laser) are all 90%+ Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix and how to prevent future occurances. My total page count is 2532 for this printer.

There is no lever to lift to expose the toner roller... it is already exposed when I take out the black toner cartridge. (this is a color printer with 4 toner cartridges)

The toner roller is covered in black toner, and when I rotate it, it dips back in the toner and is coated again in toner. I wipe off excess toner, though. There is also another shiny roller inside the printer that the toner roller seems to touch: I cleaned that with a lint free cloth. Also I cleaned the gray rubber roller that feeds the paper out of the printer. But I am still getting the streak.

I cleaned the black corona wire, but I still have the gray streak. It may also be described as a gray haze on the left side of the page, that looks darkest near the right side of the page. But the rightmost 1/2 inch of the page is perfectly white.

Try cleaning the wire grid- sounds like you have some gunk on the corona wire- in the printer under the toner cartridge is a wire grid that charges the paper before toner is applied- if there is gunk on those wires, you will get the smudge you described. You may want to use an antistatic brush and you *WILL* need to remove the power from the printer. Also, if you have one, a vacuum approved for both ESD and capable of vacuuming toner- don't use a standard shopvac, bad things like toner stuck in the motor of the vacuum and causing fire may occur. Fair warning, be prepared for something nasty- last time I had an issue similar to that ended up with me pulling a toner-caked, extra-crispy palmetto bug (Think of your standard cockroach, then triple or quadruple the size.) out of the corona wire.

Then I would suspect the fuser assembly itself- you may need to have Brother service the printer- generally I tend to be leery with devices that push over 100 V and modestly high amperage!

Check on the toner and lift the lever to open the part covering the roller inside. It might have filled with ink or it needs cleaning. You can wipe it clean with a soft microfiber cloth then try printing again if it made any changes. If yes, then you may need to change that toner.

Yip, its fuser film alright. You could pick up a fuser unit / kit from:

http://www.printersupplies.com/c-Laserjet3015Parts.html

and fix it yourself using the manual in this post:

The is blocked by dust on the side of the paper on the image unit that would have color associated with the print. Remove all the image units and clean all the laser glass. Replace those image units also if streaking as for the paper ensure correct paper side and media type.

HP3330....machine is adding a wide black streak about 3 inches wide down the center of printed pages. Is this something I can fix ?

Check the fuser for the problem, look at rear of printer and open access door to fuser, look at gray plastic film if film broken replace fuser, if film has black mark replace fuser. Note replacing fuser NOT considered a user replaceable item.

When printing, I see a vertical streak on the printed page, from top to bottom, about 2 1/4 inches from the left side of the paper, and about 1/16 of an inch wide. I can't seem to see what causes this. The...

This is more than likely down to the upper roller in the fuser assembly. It's the heat roller at the back of the printer. The upper roller wears so paper dust and toner stick to the roller which then can get deposited back on to the page.

Printer prints a black streak down the reverse side

You have a build up of ink inside the printer. I had a Canon that did this. I had to take the ink & print head out, and tear a paper towel strip 1 " wide and 13" long or however long the paper towel is. I folded it in half down the length so it was 1/2x13. Then used a plastic strip to shove it under the part the print head sits in. Once I got the towel to the other side, I grabbed it with my hand. I removed the plastic strip used to shove the paper towel under. So now the paper towel sticks out both sides underneath the print head cradle. I gently pull the paper towel back and forth so the paper towel can clean off the ink build up. Hope this helps.

Lines down both the left side of the printouts.

good day,

this usually occurs when you print large volume of copies of documents that goes beyond the printable area of the paper, some powders stick in the roller of your printer hence making the gray streak.

you can check if the rollers have accumulated some powder, if so, have the rollers cleaned.

i hope this will help.

2 IN. GRAY AREA DOWN SIDE PAPER

There are several things that can cause this. A worn toner cartridge and/or transfer roller can cause vertical smears, but it may also be a worn fuser assembly. The teflon coating on the fixing (heat) roller wears off, and leaves vertical streaks of varying widths on the pages. Sometimes you may see "ghost" images on the pages for the same reason. Open the back door of the printer, and hold down the exit guide on the fuser (carefull, it may be very hot). There are two long rollers, the lower one is black, the upper roller is either grey or shiny brown. That's the teflon coating. See if it's peeled or damaged. If so, replace the fuser assembly.
