Question about Dell 1700n Laser Printer

2 Answers

I have a Dell 1700n. The paper runs through the machine fine but no toner is being deposited on the paper at all. It is a brand new toner cartridge and a new drum. Don't know if it worked before as I have only just bought the printer second hand. It had no drum or toner in it. I was told that it was working ok.

Your are in a difficult position. Since you do not know that the printer worked before, you have no way of knowing for sure where the problem might be. It could be the toner cartridge, drum cartridge or the printer. The laser shutter may not be opening which will cause blank prints. Could be the high voltage unit. There are numerous things it "could" be and that is where you would really need an experienced technician to take measurements and make observations as to what is going on. Another thing you could try is to call your local toner cartridge recharging shops and see if they have the capability of testing your cartridges. They should do this for free. If the cartridges both made prints then at least you would know that the printer was not working when you got it. The same shops sometimes do service and may be able to tell you what is wrong.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

A laser printer works by feeding a sheet of paper in from a hopper, negatively charging it by passing it over the corona wire. At the same time the drum is being scanned by the laser, which attracts toner to the drum before being put onto the paper. The paper is then passed through a heater (fuser unit) which bonds the toner to the paper.
If there's no toner being deposited on the page, even in a test print, then it could be that the laser isn't firing or that the drum isn't being charged properly by either the laser.
To test, start to print a page, half way through switch off the printer and look to see what is on the drum. If the drum has toner on it (should be a reverse image of what you are trying to print), then the toner isn't being deposited on the paper (corona wire).

I am getting the paper jam light, I have looked everywhere and there is no paper jam. Is there another item that would cause the sensor to read jam. What can I do to fix?

I have a brother and have had paper jams I couldn't find before. Try pulling out the toner cartridge. It could be inside of that area where you can't see it from the regular openings.

New Dell 1710 laser printer is generating faded characters

This usually happens when the toner is running low.
Try removing the toner cartridge and shake it in a horizontal position and insert it back in the printer. This may give you a few more printed pages before you have to get a new toner cartridge.

I changed the toner drum in my Dell lasaer printer and now all I get is an error message with a flashing toner. How can I get the printer to print? Thanks,

Did you use a factory new toner cartridge or a refilled/third party cartridge.

If it is a factory new cartridge, contact Dell and let them know you were issued a defective cartridge.

If it is refilled or third party, try to get your money back and hope that you have not damaged your printer.

Then go get a factory new cartridge.

My Dell 1700n Drum and Toner Cartridge were both replaced when the drum replace light blinked and the print was getting lighter. Despite resetting the Drum counter the printer still only prints faintly...

Have you checked the fuser?

A laser printer fuser assembly is the heating roller unit that melts and fuses the toner onto the paper. The fuser assembly is made up of a heating roller and a pressure roller.

The heating roller applies the heat to the toner on the printed page and the pressure roller presses and fuses the toner into the printed page. If it's bad and not heating properly, the print will be faint, which is what you describe. You may be able to remove and clean the fuser, but if the printer gets lots of use, it may just be worn out.

See this link for an idea of what it looks like and a price.

I have a Dell 1700n that prints just fine, except that the toner is not fused to the paper. If I blow on the paper the toner all blows off. How do i determine which part is failed.

The fuser is bad, check inside for paper wrapped around the fuser roller because normally the printer will shut down if there's not enough heat at the fuser or the lamp is burned out. The fuser is just before the paper exit and has heat warning labels attached.

Drum has toner on it/Cleaning the drum

You will need to replace it, you can use a soft cloth and clean it off, but it will only come back after the next print.

Dell 1700n Laser Printer Jam trouble

If it?s always in the same spot then you can narrow your search for the problem. -Look where the leading edge of the paper is getting jammed up for an obstruction, especially if the paper is folded in an accordion fashion. Look closely, I?ve fixed many a paper jam by pulling out a corner of a page stuck in a recess. -If the paper path is clear then the next thing I would suspect is the paper you are using. -Try new paper that isn?t bowed, folded or curled. Before inserting into the paper try flex it back and forth along the width and length, then insert making sure to slide the two side guides and the back guide until they fit snugly against the stack of paper. -Other things to check are the rollers where the leading edge of the paper is getting stuck. Make sure they are clean. -Also make sure your toner cartridge is inserted into the printer correctly. If you have a spare try using that, sometimes cartridges can drag on the paper.
