It sounds like you have done the right things to narrow down the source of your problem. It does sound like the Playstation is at fault.
You can try cleaning the lens on the laser pick-up with a cleaning disc. That is really all the end user can do with these machines.
If that does not help, the laser pick up is probably weak. I have seen this on many different types of units that have a laser pick-up (DVD players, CD players). When the laser gets weak, it just needs to be replaced. It can play some disc's but it will be very picky about others. I have even seen disc players that will play every single disc you put into it except 1. Even if that 1 disc is in good condition. It is a rare problem, most of the time a ick up that is weak will not play any disc's or just a couple of disc's.
I have been repairing electronics for over 17 years and optical disc players/recorders since they have been selling them.
Now the bad news, which you can verify with Sony if you like. The only way to get it repaired is to send it to the Sony factory service center which is located in Mexico. They may have you send it to El Paso Texas and then they will run it across the border to Mexico. They have an office in El Paso right across the border from the service center. But they will not sell parts for the Playstation to any service center, not even my own shop which is a Sony authorized service center.
I don't know why they started doing this just about 2 years ago, I guess it saves them money.
Sorry for the bad news, I hope the problem is just the lens needing to be cleaned.
If you feel this information was helpful a good rating would be appreciated. Thanks.
