Question about Kenmore Dishwashers

1 Answer

Dishes are not being cleaned. Water temp is ok. Neither spray arm is rotating.

Well the dishwasher worked great for a month, but there seems to be a new problem. Again, it's not cleaning properly. The bottom arm is rotating, but the top one isn't. However, now the tub is not filling all the way. The water does not reach the heating element. The float seems to move freely and when I manually lift it I can here it "click" when it reaches proper water level.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

here's an update on this problem: The bottom spray-arm IS spinning. The upper arm (under the top rack ) is not spinning, but it IS getting water, though it only dribbles out. There also is a small jet on the roof of the washer, over the top rack that is getting no water at all.

I would next take apart the jet and the top sparay arm to determine if the water is just nor getting there with enough pressure or more then likely the jet and arm are plugged with dirt...
I would probably first replace them and see what result you get before tearing into it any further...
Just a very small amount of dirt in the spray arm can cause it to basically not owrk at all...

  • kjdupuis Oct 13, 2010

I did take the arm apart earlier and it is clean. I'll try the jet next. Also, it seems that the water coming from the bottom arm has very little pressure, tho it's hard to tell when opening the door quickly.

Could this be a pump that's failing?

    Thanks for you help.

It is possible the the pump is failing, but I want to make sure that you don't spend th money for the pump and then find out that it was an inexpensive part...
So all of the holes in the spray are were clean and there was nothing inside it???

  • kjdupuis Oct 13, 2010

Yes, it was very clean. I couldn't see dirt, debris etc.

I fixed it. Turns out the chopper assembly was completely plugged. I disassembled the Sump assembly and removed and cleaned the chopper. I then started the machine with the sump assembly removed and there seemed to be tons of pump pressure. I reassembled everything and started the machine again. Both spray arms and the top jet all rotated. I then loaded and ran it through a complete cycle. Everything was A-OK.

It is just not cleaning the dishes. Runs - OK

If you are noticing that the dishes are not clean, then there are a few things to check for. Check the soap powder if it's kept in a dry environment. Also try replacing the powder with something like a gel or liquid. Next thing to check for is the water pressure and fill valve. Check if the water is filling in and the spray arms are throwing the water with enough pressure. Try and listen to the sound if you hear a proper spraying action sound.

If it seems as a low water pressure then check the fill valve. Now, check if dishwasher is draining the water or not. While the dishwasher is working check whether the dishwasher is draining and there is not much left out water after the cycle is complete. Try cleaning the spray arm with a soft brush. The water temperature plays a major role in cleaning of dishes. The temp should be between 125 and 150 F for dishwasher to clean the dishes. Hope this helps...

Dishes are cloudy and have soap residue. Have cleaned upper &lower spray arm often, as good as posible (find holes plugged). water level & temp. seems normal . Water intake screen appears clean

Clean the spray arm jet holes if they are blocked. Check whether you have filled the rinse-aid dispenser.

Check whether arm turns freely when rotated by hand manually.

Our newer dishwasher does not clean the dishes presently. The water heats up, and drains properly, but I noticed the sprayer nozzles are not spinning when I open the dishwasher.

Try manually rotating the spray arm. Check the orifices & clean if clogged.

After loading the dishes check every time before closing the door for free rotation of the spray arm.

Lower dishwasher arm not rotating

Probably blocked spray arms is the cause of the unit not cleaning properly or rotating. Remove each spray arm (there are 3 in total) and check and clean all the holes as this is where the water sprays out from to clean the dishes and glasses. When they are blocked you get poor wash results.

Dishwasher is running but dishes aren't clean

sounds like the top or middle spray arm isn't rotating, most likely a clogged spray arm, try and remove sprayer arm and clean it

LG LDS5811WW Low pressure out of spray arms

On the LG LDF xxxx dishwasher family, the Vario feature uses a motor/check valve to switch between "full power" cleaning from _either_ the lower or the upper spray arms, never at the same time. So, not seeing the upper arm spin during the lower arm spinning is standard operating procedure.

But back to your problem. Step one would be to remove the filter assembly again and make certain that there is nothing (debris, broken glass) blocking the white areas where the check valve rotates to switch between upper/lower spray arms. A blockage there ~could~ cause impotent spraying/cleaning.

If there is no blockage and the impeller remains in good shape, suspect a failing wash pump motor. Try to isolate the noise to that motor.

Watch for error codes on the display and report back what you find, OK?

Good Luck!

Will not get dishes clean

If like you say the water pressure is good the water temp is good (120o minimum). The soap dispensor opens and nothing is blocking the arms from rotating then my guess is the unit is being overloaded. There needs to be space between the dishes so that the spray can hit the surface. Also, most folks know this but bears repeating... the dishes, cups, pots, etc. have to face down or angle toward the spray. I have seen people just throw dishes in facing up and then wonder why it doesnt get clean.

Dirty dishes

if water comes into machine then valve is ok.
open machine when in cycle and look to see if spray arms are rotating
if not, then take out and clean.
spray arms only rotate with water jetting out of angled nozzles at end and if these are blocked then no rotation and poor wash

GE dishwasher GSD2200G00WW dishes not clean

Make sure the spray arm is actually rotating and the jets aren't clogged. You should be able to hear the arm rotating when the dishwasher is operating.

Otherwise, perhaps the pump is plugged or not working and the water isn't "jetting"

My Bosch dishwasher model #SHU43C05UC/14 drains well and has enough water(I replaced the inlet water valve already),but not washing the dishes clean especially the top rack. What could be wrong?

open machine when running and check both spray arms rotating - you will get a bit of water out. if spray arms not rotating, usual cause is debris in the arms. the spray arms only rotate by water jetting from angled jets at the end of the arms. take them out and make sure all debris removed
