Question about Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS (WD2500JS20PK) 250 GB Hard Drive

Hi, My previous computer died and I have tried to

Hi, My previous computer died and I have tried to salvage the old functional hard drive as an external storage device for use with a new computer ( both running windows XP). I also want to access some important files on the old hard drive that I foolishly didn't back up! I have purchased a compatible enclosure however when I connect the drive to my new computer am unable to access any of the files. The drive is allocated letter F in the MY COMPUTER section and properties highlight the drive usage ( ~ 80gb used / 160gb free ), however when I select the drive no files appear in the window. The hard drive in question is a WESTERN DIGITAL WD2500JS-00MHB0 I am not particularly good with computers and would really appreciate any help in rectifying this problem, if only to get some important photos off the drive before binning it. Many Thanks in advance. Lee

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

Bad hard drive

Hard drives cannot generally be repaired, I would recommend a replacement. If you have important documents saved to it, try taking it to a local computer repair store and see if they can salvage your files.

The drive has just died. You might be able to salvage something from it if you take out the hard disk from it and you plug it inside a desktop - but don't expect too much, usually when they die they die for good and all the data is lost.

Try a different computer if it doesn't recognize it either than its fried a tech could still try to take it apart and pull out the internal hard drive to salvage some of the data. good luck

Computer won't recognize hard drive anymore

The clicking sounds and lack of response makes this sound like a dying hard drive to me, sorry to say.

I would try it on another computer if possible.

There are data retrieval experts but they tend to be expensive, files need to be quite important to make this worthwhile.

Won't connect to computer; turns on just fine, but computer doesn't even register it. have tried connecting it to 2 computers, with no success.

Sounds like the internal interface card in the hard drive has failed. Luckily if you can hear the hard drive power up then your data is salvagable.

You have a couple of choices:

If you have the item still under warranty then get it replaced and they should provide either a data recovery or replacement of the internal board.

If not then open up the casing and disconnect the drive from the internal power and data cables. Purchase a USB to hard drive cable, which will allow you to transfer the data to another PC, or purchase a replacement hard drive enclosure, which may not look as good as the one you have, but will be just as functional. Enclosures can be purchased from a computer store, Amazon, Ebay etc for very little money.

In your new computer go to all programs then to your user guide. Once there open the guide and follow prompts to transfer data from old computer to your new one. Some stuff may have to be reformatted do work with Vista.

You can buy an external USB drive enclosure, mount the drive in the enclosure, then connect the old drive to the new system.

here is a popular model:

if teh old system is a portable, then there are 2.5 versions also available
