SOURCE: cold water suply filling up header tank in loft thru hot water suply on shower.

hi did you run a seperate cold water supply from the storage tank to the shower pump & also a seperate hot supply from the hot water cylinder, it sounds as though the cold water is crossing into the hot service & pushing its way up to the tank as its the only way it can go, sounds as though the cold water connection to the shower is not tank fed & possibly directly off the water main.?

SOURCE: only hot water, no cold water.

The cartridges in the single handle units are prone to display this issue in hard water areas as mineral deposits such as calcium build up on the stem. The stems also have small rubber band like rings - for lack of a better term- that break apart and can clog the ports on the side where the are on. New stem should resolve the issue totally unless you have had a pipe break or other construction to the plumbing system recently. Thanks for using Fix Ya.

Sounds like the high speed relay is stuck or not working at all, It is in the main contol box, and can be manually tripped to see if this is indeed the problem. Unless you are a skilled repair tech, this job is better left to a pro.

Just replaced all my hoses did everything i needed to work on a heater and all went well until I turned on my breaker and the top of the tank where the wires are connected started to smoke

it definitely needs to dry out when dry you need to test the components --thermostat--the element [s] --if damaged repair or replace most reasons hot water heaters are replaced is because the tank leaks or rusts out --the components are easily replaceable and inexpensive

Brand new water heater not working

touch your volt meter to the element wires with power on to see if you get 240 that far. if you do your element is bad. they can test good and still be bad. if you dont get 240 to it then you have a bad reset switch

Water heater

Guessing that you have 240Volt residential non-simultaneous electric water heater? And that you have 30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire. And that water heater is located within 100 feet of breaker box. And there are no leaks running hot water out of tank. And that you installed fully brand NEW elements of same wattage as old elements. And that fully brand new thermostats were installed, and wiring exactly duplicates wiring that was present before. And that factory-insulation was re-installed over elements and thermostats.

1) Guessing the 'hot water shut off' means the ECO red reset button located on upper thermostat keeps tripping and cutting off electric power to water heater?

http://waterheatertimer.org/images/WH-w-combined2-1000.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-wires.html

2) If the ECO is tripping, then water is getting too hot, or there is shorted wire located near the upper thermostat, .
Typically replacing both thermostats and replacing elements will solve this problem .... assuming that new thermostats and elements are good, and wiring correct.
Double-Check your wiring on upper and lower thermostats.
Test wires for short.
Make sure factory-insulation is re-installed over thermostats so cool room temperature will not affect temperature reading.
Check that thermostats sit flat against steel tank.
Many short draws hot water can also cause stacking event that will trip circuit breaker.

3) Add comment and say what you find using checklist above.
Be careful to explain findings fully, using same words found on links above, so illuminated diagnosis can be made.

How long does the model 81v52d last in years?

Did you clean sediment out of tank when replacing elements?
Did you replace thermostats? Thermostats go bad, or get out of calibration.
Copy following link for tank-type electric water heater troubleshoot:

Test elements.
Sounds like lower element is burned out.
Clean sediment out of tank. Check for water leak running hot water out of tank by putting ear against pipe.
Replace both thermostats.

Electric water heater will last 20+ years, IF ...
Electric water heater is totally unique because it can last forever with part replacement using parts from hardware store, as long as tank does not rust because of depleted anode rod, and pressure is kept below 80psi.

Annual water heater maintenance will pay you $10 a month, tax free money in pocket, by avoiding tank replacement.

Hotwater heater new won't heat??

Is water inside tank Hot?
Open TP valve and also open drain valve.
If tank is hot, then you might have plumbing problem caused by bad faucet cartridge or check valve.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Crossover.html

Red reset button is located on upper thermostat.
Test for 120Volt across top two screws on upper thermostat.
You might have a bad upper thermostat.
If electric water heater has some hot water, then upper element is good.

Replace the melted part.

If tank is popping breaker, then the melted part has a short circuit.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html
When replacing thermostats, I usually replace both of them
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html

There are 5 basic parts to electric water heater.
Electricity to water heater.
Upper thermostat
Upper element
Lower thermostat
Lower element
It sounds like electricity is good.
Elements are probably good if just replaced, but one of them could have a short.
Thermostat is melted, so replace it and see if it restores hot water.
If not, then take 40 minutes and do complete troubleshoot as shown in link above.

There is a solution.
Ordinary tank-type electric water heaters are fully repairable by homeowner.

You have a new heater that works fine most of the time, but reset button trips.
That says tank is getting correct electricity.
It says that elements are good.
And you don't have sediment problem with new tank.

If you do not want to test parts, then replace upper and lower thermostats for $28.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html
The reason I suspect defective thermostat is that tank has 4 parts: 2 elements and 2 thermostats, and you have plenty of hot water so elements are probably good.
The reason I replace both thermostats is to avoid uncertainty.
Tighten screws very tight against copper wire.
Be sure to put back insulation and covers on water heater so thermostats not exposed to cool air which can lead to overheated water.
Then send bill for $28, plus labor and aggravation to Rheem
Your plumber should have done this for you as part of warranty, but sometimes self-sufficiency is valuable.

If you want to test water heater parts before replacing anything, then buy multimeter and take 30 minutes to become electric water heater expert:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html
Buy cheap multimeter at home center.
When testing continuity or testing elements, rotate multimeter dial to Ohms.
When testing for voltage,, rotate multimeter dial to 240-250-277 VAC

You can also double check anything fixya or plumber tells you by posting question on professional water heater forum like the Tank:

Water is no longer hot

A heating element is either good or bad and no inbetween. If your unit has two elements, then one of the elements is bad. If it is a single element unit then the thermostat has gone bad. Do a voltage check to see if you have power going to both elements and if you do then do a ohms test on the elements. They shoudl read 5 to 10 ohms. If one of them doens't, then you know it is bad. If by chance check the elements and everything is working, the only thing that can be left is that the dip tub has ruptured somewhere close to the top of the outlet. But I would put my money on a bad element.
