Toshiba laptop will not turn on, screen is completely black

I was surfing on the internet when the screen went black. I manually restart it, and nothing happens, the screen is just blank and there's no whirling of the fan like it usually is. So I restart it again(the ac adaptor is plugged in at this point into a surge protector), and the logo comes on and the fans so I'm relieved. I leave it on to go to the grocery store, and when I come back the screen is black again. The 3 lights are still on, so I just unplug the adaptor to see if anything changes, but the power button is still lighted, so I start the restart processes. Nothing worked so my uncle opens up the laptop, and says that the motherboard is fried because the dvd rom drive won't eject and there are no sounds coming from the laptop, not even the fan even if the power light is on. I kind of want a second opinion before I go off and buy a new laptop, as I'm a poor college student. Did I electrically short circuit it or something?

I haven't but I don't have an s-cable. But I do have automatic sign on the moment the windows open, and my friend says they can't see me. When my brother broke a previous laptop monitor where we couldn't see anything, this method proved that the computer still worked.

have you tried to run the laptop with an external monitor yet? if you plug an external monitor into your laptop and it works then it might be your graphics card.

Don't pay attention to your uncle. I had the same problem. Blue ring, power lights on. Sometimes the laptop would come up after a few minutes and then would freeze. It is a power problem. The AC jack may be broken and, most likely, you need to get the MAX1632A power controller (a 40-48 pin black IC next to the AC jack) resoldered too (get someone qualified to do it, with the right soldering station for surface mount work). I have a Toshiba satellite the screen went black it is still running but sc4een black. Have tried many restart options need help

Depending on the model the screen may have failed, the inverter failed or the GPU failed. Plug an external monitor in, power up the laptop and if you get a picture, your screen failed. If no picture the Nvidea GPU has failed.

Toshiba satellite pskoqu screen blanking

Please check the air vents (inlet and outlet) and clean them up using a canned air, and use an external monitor to test this laptop. If the problem is not solved, then your laptop's GPU/motherboard is dying.

My toshiba A200 screen occasionally turns black and music also stops. When i try manually restarting my laptop, sometimes it works but most of the time it doesnt boot at all. Sometimes it doesnt even go...

This sounds like a hard drive is, or has failed. Either that or the RAM (memory has gone bad)
Did you let the laptop overheat? Was it left on for a long time? Or is this just an old machine ?
I would replace the hard drive, and reload the operating system, that is if you really want to keep the laptop. If that solves it great! Also, did you notice if there are any "beep" noises, or error messages when it acts up? Often times, you can go on the internet and find out what the messages mean.

I re-started my toshiba A135 laptop, and the screen went black

There are dozens of possible root causes for your problem I guess.

But exactly the same happened to me in fact on a packard bell laptop. After my son forced it to reset, it didn't start again. Only one led was lit. After a long search I found that the battery had died and this prevented the laptop to start even when the power supply was plugged in.

Try this: remove the battery, connect it to the power supply and restart.

Hope that helps
