It is likely just a support clamp for the ducting
Remove the three screws along the top at the back of the machine to remove the plastic trim. The top (wood/melamine) slides out the back.
You'll see a metal duct that goes in to a sleeve at the top of the rubber door seal.
The rubber seal is held to the drum by a wire ring that is tightened with a nut and bolt.
The door seal is held to the front of the machine by a white plastic ring
Install the door boot back over the frame of the door opening ensure you fit it snugly all the way around the door. Beginning at the top of the door, start inserting the wire hoop back into the groove. Make sure to wire spring points towards the bottom. As you work your way around the door to the 4 and 8 o'clock positions, you will need to maintain some constant downward pressure while pulling the spring apart in order to snap it back into place. It would be advisable to use a second set of hands to hold the wire hoop in place while doing this as it has the tendency to want to come out of the groove. Hope This Helps
It goes to the outer lip of the door opening where the groove is to secure the door gasket. It definitely serve such purpose, not for nothing.

Information provided is insufficient and unclear.
HOW do I refit the seal and precisely WHERE does it fit? If the metal circle goes inside lip then you have the spring mechanism sticking out (ie not fitting flush)
Are we even talking about the same machine? Whirlpool AWM 1000. There isn't a wood/melamine top but a metal one. The wire ring is held together with a spring and hook mechanism and not a nut and bolt. There is no plastic white ring anywhere in/on the machine.
I did not expect to pay for answers that don't even talk about the same machine.
