SOURCE: re: canon ir3100cn E000020-0081
I just spent 20 min typing a detailed post why the e225 is already fixed and the e020-0081 is common and means the drumm patch sensor is dirty and then the web site erased it. Grr.
The drum patch sensor shines down at about the 11 o'clock position halfway down the drum. Remove the drum taking care not to scratch it or the transfer belt and clean the sensor window.
If the problem re-occurs then you may need new developer units.

SOURCE: Canon 850 E001 Error
I entered service mode and it fixed itself.
With the front panel open and the copier lid/carriage lifted up, I used a paperclip and stuck it in the small hole on the center of the front grey panel (the covering of the DC controller) . I simultaneously used a pen to hold down the tab in the slot on the lower left edge that makes the copier think the lid is down...then I hit the power button. It reset the error code and all is OK now.

This is what this machine does best! :P
Since you have already had the drum out, pull it out again. get a small flash light and look inside. About half way inside, at about the 10 or11 o'clock position is a small sensor that shines on the drum. Take a cloth and wipe the surface and reassemble and all should be well. Note the colour of the toner wiped off the sensor, (it is most likely black) if the problem returns then the developer unit of that colour needs to be replaced. The black can be replaced by itself but the colours should be replaced as a set.
