GE Profile PDS22SBRR Stainless Steel Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Logo

I have a GE PDS22S refrigerator. The surface of the unit around the front of the freezer compartment is extremely hot--the front surface between the refrigerator and freezer is so hot I could not hold my hand on it for more than half a second. From what I've read, I gather that there is a heating element surrounding the freezer opening to remove condensation around the seals, but I cannot imagine that this is the designed temperature for the device. Consequently, the freezer temperature is somewhere around 24 degrees even though it is set for 0. I never noticed the surface heat before but that doesn't mean it hasn't been a problem for a while; our electric bills are at least double what they should be. Is this a defective defrost heater?

It sounds like the condenser fan motor has failed. Pull out the frig. Remove the back bottom panel and check the operation of the fan motor located next to the compressor. A failed condenser fan motor will cause the mullion to get very hot. Another possibility is heavily dust coated condenser coils that restricts the air flow. That is not a correct model number so I can't post the part number for the fan motor.

My older frost free GE Profile gets VERY hot on the sides and on the top during part of the cycle.
Is your temp indicator picking up the heat from the cycle? Check actual temp using a thermometer...hardware store should have one.
Are doors competely closed on the unit? No Food or plastic wraps/bags in the way?
Is the fan working properly, not squeaking or squealing?

SOURCE: variance in freezer compartment temperature

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost heater, defrost thermostat. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control board.

SOURCE: I installed a GE Monogram

No this is not normal. Maybe is not a big problem since the temperature in th freezer is finaly withing acceptable limits which mean that your products will not be spoiled and freezer will consume extreme energy by going below 0.
However the temperature should be stable between -2 to 0 not -3 not 1.
The problem is either the thermostat probe or the electronic thermostat or the elctronic control board.
The first two is not so expensive so in this case you can replace them. The electronic board it is cost about $200 so in this case maybe you should leave it if and only the problem get worst.
Finaly I sugest to keep an eye on it and only if the proble get worst then you should proceed to find which is the acual problem from three above and fix it. Also you should know that 0 degrees is the normal setting for the freezer.

Food compartment cools ok; bottom freezer doesn't.

the problem when a fridge needs a condensor fan is that it causes the unit to work harder there is a good chance that it cooked the sealed systm also might want to check the condensor for a clogg or dirty condensor.the temp around the unit ideally these are to be used in rooms of 65 to 96 degrees so if in garage can be hard to work well

It can reach temperatures of 120 degrees. It is to prevent condensation between the freezer and fresh food compartments.

42'' monogram getting very hot between doors and in unit above

This is typical for frost-free refridgerators/freezers. In order to keep ice from buiding up on the interior walls of the freezer section, the manufacturer installs electric defrosting elements and extra "warming" elements in the outer edges of the cabinet, normally around the door openings to help mitigate any frost/ice build up and surface condensation that typically occurs on the exterior surfaces as the doors are opened and closed frequently.

These edge warmers stay very warm to keep ice and condensation from accumulating and will become VERY very warm (hot) when the fridge/freezer is in the once a day defrost cycle.

Unless you have an energy saver switch (GE trademark) inside the fridge section, which you can turn off, there is no way to disable these added elements. If you find that you're getting ice building up in the freezer, you'll need to turn off the energy saver switch to resolve that issue.

Energy Saver switch "ON" means these elements are off, while having the ES switch "OFF" means those heaters are running all the time and costing you more in energy consumption

48" side by side Monogram center between doors getting very hot

this problem is due to low or no air flow aross the condenser coil on your refrigerator. according to sthe model number you listed I'm assuming this is a bult in unit so the condenser coils are going to be on top of the unit. Here are the steps to check and possibly repair your unit:
  • Open compartment cover on top.
  • check and clean the coils that will be exposed, you can either vacum or blow them out with compressed air depending on how dirty they are
  • there is also a fan that cools this coil, check that it is running. this is probably why it is getting so hot in center post and freezer isnt doing good.
if the motor is bad you can position a regular house fan blowing into the motor compartment and it will get everything back to normal until the unit is repaired.
Fyi: there is a hot gas freon line that runs between the doors that controls exterior unit moisture and when there is poor or no air flow across the condenser coil it causes this area to get extremely hot. There is no fire hazzard tho.
If I can be of further assistance please ask. Thanks Peyton

GE side by side not cooling properly/outside surface hot

please check the condenser fan motor. it is probably not running or the condenser is very dirty.

remove the rear cover and it will show you the compressor and the condenser fan.
if the fan is not running, try to rotate it manually and feel if it is sticking .

if it is, it may just need the old wd 40 lubricant.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Kenmore Elite Trio . Very hot case.

Make sure your condenser coils are clean. If they are dirty it will not only effect the cooling but may cause higher temperature around the casing of the box.
